"You shall not see your brother's donkey or his ox fall down along the road, and hide yourself from them; you shall surely help him lift [them] up again. Deuteronomy 22:4
Helping others takes time. But the problem is, when you see someone who needs help, you're often on your way to work, and can't afford to be late. Or you're on your way to an appointment. You have to trust God that He will take care of the consequences if helping someone takes time you can't really spare.
God went on to say, "If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying under its burden, and you would refrain from helping it, you shall surely help him with it" (Exodus 23:5). Help your enemy when he has car problems or has spilled a load? Isn't God judging him? Didn't God make him trip up? Shouldn't you smile as you pass by and let him stew in his own juices?
No, God says, help him. You really have to trust Him on this, when your sense of vindictiveness is crying out for you to turn a blind eye "and you would refrain from helping." You have to overcome your selfish nature, stop, roll up your sleeves, and help someone in a situation like that.
Prayer: Lord, You have such practical commands, wanting us to love one another. Help me not to look away from my neighbor's trouble when he needs my help.
