In God We Trust is the official motto of the United States. It was adopted in 1956 and has appeared on US currency ever since. Although the phrase’s inclusion still remains popular with most Americans, its truth is not self-evident.
People trust in all kinds of things for their safety: physical strength, person firearms, a strong military. They trust their political representative (at least more than they do the other party’s political representative). They trust in their bank accounts and their work ethic to take care of their needs.
The problem is that all these things will fail. Physical strength is meaningless against disease. Statistically, homes where firearms are present are more likely than those without to experience gun violence—both homicides and suicides. Political representatives are famous for being untrustworthy. And bank accounts can be wiped out in an instant by a poor economy or unexpected expenses.
Only God is fully trustworthy. He alone is our Help and our Shield. He is the source of all good things. His plans do not fail. Take a moment today and let your heart be glad in him.
