Impractical Pride

A man's pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor. Proverbs 29:23

Sometimes God’s plan doesn’t make sense, but there are practical reasons for His commands. Pride’s a good example. God says He resists the proud (James 4:6). Other people recognize pride and turn away. God says pride leads to self-deception (Galatians 6:3). Other people believe those with blatant pride are delusional. God says pride leads to destruction (Proverbs 16:18). Proud but broken people make the news every day.

Pride causes an inflated view of yourself. It favorably compares personal accomplishments with others’ and believes itself to be superior. Pride pays attention to personal success while minimizing personal failure. Pride has no place in God’s plan because comparing personal skills and accomplishments with others is not the comparison God uses. He compares you with His Son, Jesus—and the comparison isn’t in your favor.

By God’s grace you’re made acceptable (not superior) to God and others. He wants to use you, not to elevate you, but to advance His plan.

Proverbs 27:2 says, “Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.” Pride always has a motive for its actions. It demands to be noticed and is never really satisfied with each new accomplishment.

Honor is always a by-product of thinking more of others and less of self (see John 3:30).
