“I thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints; and I pray that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through the knowledge of every good thing which is in you for Christ’s sake. For I have come to have much joy and comfort in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.” (Philemon 1:4-7 NASB1995)

As followers of Jesus Christ, and thus parts of the body of Christ, his church, hopefully we are in fellowship with other believers in Jesus Christ with whom we can honestly and sincerely speak such words as these spoken by Paul to Philemon and to some of the other saints of God who met in his home. And we should thank God for them, for their walks of faith in the Lord Jesus, and for what a blessing they are from God in our own lives, and for how they encourage us and others in our walks of faith in obedience to our Lord.

For, as the body of Christ, his church, that is how we are to operate. We are to encourage one another in Christ, showing the love of Christ to one another. We should be likeminded with Christ first and foremost, and then we should be of one mind and heart with other believers who are also likeminded with Christ. We are not to be selfish people, but we are to care for the needs of our fellow believers in Christ, as we are led of the Spirit and called of God in knowing the needs and how God would have us meet them.

And we are to use the spiritual gifts we have been given of the Holy Spirit in the body parts assignments we have received from God for the nurturing and encouragement and spiritual nourishment and growth of the body of Christ. And please be aware that we are all necessary parts of the body, and that we each have an assignment from God, and we are all to be ministers of God’s love and grace to one another in teaching, encouraging, exhorting, nurturing, and in warning one another against those who teach lies, too.

Please also know that the church is not a building called “church.” It is not a physical location you go to, and then you leave until you go back. And it is not to be run like a business, and it is not to incorporate (join, merge) with the government and with the world, and it is not something to be marketed to the people of the world, making the “church” more like the world in order to “draw in large crowds of people from the world.” For that is not the church with Christ as head, and it is what God forbids and warns his people against.

[Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:13-17; Acts 5:27-32; 1 Corinthians 1:10-13; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Philippians 3:18-19; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22; Revelation 13:5-8; Revelation 18:1-5]

And that also means that the church, being the universal body of Christ, is not limited by physical space. For in our day and age we can gather together anywhere appropriate on any day of the week, at any hour of day, as two or more are gathered together to minister to one another, as the Scriptures teach we are to do daily. And these gatherings can be virtual via the internet and social media or via video conversations or via telephone calls or internet chats and text messages, etc., and for our mutual spiritual encouragement.

And “encouragement” is not all the “feel good stuff,” either. The word means to exhort, or to urge with a holy urging, and to counsel and warn of danger and of deceptions and false teachers and false doctrines of salvation, etc. And we are to speak the truth in love to one another so that none of us are taken captive by people in their deceitful scheming who are promoting a false gospel, and so that none of us, hopefully, will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. And all this should come from a heart of love.

[Matthew 5:13-16; Matthew 28:18-20; John 4:31-38; John 13:13-17; John 14:12; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:14-18,42-47; Acts 26:18; Romans 10:14-15; Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-5; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:1-16; Ephesians 5:11-21; Ephesians 6:10-20; Philippians 2:1-8; Colossians 3:12-16; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:23-25; James 5:19-20; 1 Peter 2:9,21; 1 John 2:6]

For, you see, the church is not a building, but it is us who believe in Jesus. And it isn’t supposed to be about a select few who do all the ministering, or entertaining, whatever the case may be. We are all to have a part in ministering God’s love and grace to one another. And we need that to help us to stay on course and to walk faithful to our Lord in obedience to his commands. If we don’t have it we should still walk faithful to our Lord, but oh, what a blessing when we are able to help one another to walk by faith.

When I was lonely and afflicted,
You were there to pick me up.
You took me in Your arms,
And You held me tenderly.

Your love embraced me.
Your grace sustained me.

When my heart cried out to You
In my fear and my despair,
You never turned away,
But You let me know You loved me.

Your grace forgave me.
You did not shame me.

Then, when I answered the call,
“Here, Lord, send me.”
You sent me to where I must be.
Your mercy held me, did not fail me.
All this, You had planned, to use me.

And, when all trials and scorn
Came to test me.
You gave me all that I would need.
You strengthened me so I’d not fail You.
Your kindness blessed me, it touched me.

And, when I needed the church
To lift up me,
To hearten me so I’d not fail,
You blessed me with folks who would love me.
Their presence with me, Your praise hailed!

And, when I walked through the valley
Of the shadow of the death,
And tears flowed from my eyes,
Still Your kindness was there for me.

Your touch, it healed me.
For I believed You.

When now I think about the ways,
Of the many, many ways
That You in Your great love
Show me that You’ll always care for me,

My heart, it thanks You,
And gladness fills me, fills me.
