Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, "Do not go beyond what is written" Then you will not take pride in one man over against another. For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
2 Peter 2:1-3 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
We must read the word of God on our own and know it well (fill our lamps with oil) in order to know the difference between a truthful teaching and a heresy. If we spend too much time listening to other's opinions about what God really said in the bible then we can be easily decieved. God said it right the first time and doesn't need human interpretation to interpret what he really meant when he said it. The bible explains itself like a seamless garment, and God reveals his mysteries to us through it, and by it. The bible tells us to "study" to show ourselves approved.
When the detective was asked how he could so quickly identify a good counterfiet $20 bill, he replied "I know what the real thing is supposed to look like". We can all learn much from this.
