“The LORD heard our voice.” Deuteronomy 26:7 NIV

One of the most common frustrations a counselor hears is, “He doesn’t listen.”

When confronted, the offender will often reply, “I do listen. I hear every word.”

Why the disconnect?

Listening requires the kind of mature love that moves a person to leave his own world to enter another’s—a love that does more than hear words—the kind of love God demonstrated when Jesus entered earth’s atmosphere to serve humanity (Philippians 2:5-8). This kind of love is difficult in a self-saturated world.

Moses reminded his listeners that when they cried out for help, it was the Lord who heard them (Deuteronomy 26:7). Listening isn’t a luxury. So often, it’s the road to experiencing love.

If you learn to listen the way God listens, your life will make a difference. In hearing like He hears, you’ll love like He loves. Listening will help you know, like He knows, what to give people, how to refresh them and how to provide for their needs (Psalms 68:7-14).

Prayer: Lord, help me listen in a way that helps people hear You love.
