True humility and fear of the LORD lead to riches, honor, and long life. Proverbs 22:4

Humility provides a correct view of who you are and the impressive power of God. Pride offends God, but humility brings unexpected benefits. There’s wisdom in refusing pride, but humility doesn’t seem logical when society promotes self-marketing. We often believe that if people don’t know who we are then we’ll never get noticed and our talent will be wasted.

Humility promotes hard work with no demand for recognition, and advanced work ethic when no one’s watching, and restful sleep because we’ve done our best. Humility doesn’t refuse acknowledgment; it just doesn’t chase it.

What Matthew 6:2, 4 says runs parallel to humility: “’When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get…Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.’”

It’s been said that humility isn’t thinking less of yourself; it’s not thinking of yourself at all. God knows what you do. He rewards you here or in heaven for acts of kindness and faithful service that don’t seek a spotlight and don’t demand applause. Humility refuses to do something positive in the name of God and then take all the credit for playing a supporting role.
