How to be spiritually minded and have a wonderful life in Christ

The Bible tells us "For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. [...] Because the carnal mind is enmity against God" (Romans 5:5-8, 8:7)

When we accept Christ and are willing to be His disciples, we have a carnal mind and a spiritual mind. Our spiritual mind desires to know Jesus, to seek His Word and to become a true follower. But the carnal mind thinks of worldly things (sin, suicide, anger, depression, lust, rebellion, disobedience etc) and is enemies with God. So, if our mind is not focusing on Christ, then we cannot have life and peace.

To get out of this, the Bible says that we should be "casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ" and to "be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (2 Cor 10:4-6 & Romans 12:2)

Though we cannot do this by ourselves, Jesus has given you His Name and His Blood to control your mind and be an overcomer. Whenever you have wrong or sinful thoughts, find a quiet place (or go to the bathroom) and pray: In Jesus Name I command my mind and heart to be still and know that Jesus Christ is God and only have thoughts from Christ only. In Jesus Name I cast out the spirit of (mention the sin here - example: pride, anger, lust etc) and receive the spirit of obedience to Jesus and gratefulness to Jesus for His sacrifice on the cross for me"

You can then keep saying "Blood of Jesus" over and over again (aloud) until you feel a release. But remember, you still need to renew your mind. So do an online search in the BibleGateway for the issue you are facing (such as anger, sexual immorality etc) and meditate on the scripture verses that are relevant to it.

God bless and Peace of Christ!

After hearing Steve Quayle suggest rebuking thoughts on a radio show 6 months ago..
what i've found is 90% of them aren't even mine.

few weeks back satan was literally reduced to trying to tempt me with thinking about projects the Lord gave me to work on, while i'm working on other tasks the Lord gave me to work on. that's how small he is. the rest of my sins are more or less intentional.
if it don't feel right.. it ain't from God. say "I rebuke that thought, desire, feeling, etc, in Jesus name" if its done in faith there is no waiting for a result.

no need for a quiet place, its an all day never ending battle.

To be spiritually minded is to set the mind on the Spirit, and the best way to do this is to :
pray unceasingly, rejoice always, give thanks in everything (1 Thess 5:16-18)

In spiritual warfare we have 3 main weapons: the blood of Christ (delivering and protecting us from accusations or condemnation), the testimony of Christ (what He has done for us), and not loving our life (giving satan no ground or foothold by loving the things of the world, or lusts of the eyes or flesh, yielding all areas of our life to God):
Rev 12:11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

Hi Dhanusha,

I understand that to be spiritually minded is when we believe in Jesus.
The spiritually minded are those who obey God's will, which is to believe in Jesus, John 6:40.
The works that shows our faith is believing in Jesus, John 6:29.
And in believing in Jesus we are overcomers.
1John 5:4-5
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

And to be carnally minded is to be in unbelief, such as those who turn to the law for righteousness.
Such are following the lusts of the flesh in rebellion against God. They do not submit to God's righteousness and instead seek to establish their own righteousness by trying to be perfected by the flesh.

Note also Rom 8:6-9
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.

Anyone who believes in Jesus is spiritually minded.

Hello Barny.

Nice post, well done.

John 3:36
He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not
obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

What you believe will determine who you really are in the grand scheme
of things.

If you truly believe that Jesus is the Son of God then you will listen
to what Jesus says. If you do not believe that Jesus rose from the dead
then you will not believe what Jesus said. This is simple to understand,
there are no grey areas in the scripture.

The Christian walk results primarily from the thought life that one concentrates
on. If you believe Jesus then you are spiritual, preoccupied with the thoughts
focused on Jesus and the kingdom of heaven.

Definitely not the thought life focused on wealth, lust, self, or even power.

Here, look at what Paul writes in the letter to the Romans.

Romans 8
5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but
those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,
7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to
the law of God, for it is not even able to do so,
8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

What you believe you are, what you ponder during your life will determine
who you really are. The spiritual life is the true eternal life, what you
sow you will reap. If you sow to the flesh you will die, if you follow
the thought life of the Holy Spirit, you sow to the spirit, you will live.

There is no theology, only belief which determines all things you do.

hi Dhanusha, that is a very interesting comment, "How to be spiritually minded."

After thinking about this for a while, it seamed to me you could explain this with a whole list of different devotions to God. However, to brake them down to the simplest explanation, so that a new Christian can easily grasp this. It seams to me, all you need to do is "Fear God!" Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 7:1, (NASB) " Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."

Think about it, if you develop a reverential fear of displeasing God, in your thought life, your words, your actions and intentions. Everything you choose to think, say and do will all be acceptable to God, and thus you will live your life being spiritually minded.
