And they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers, and played the harlot after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. 1 Chronicles 5:25 NKJV
The language of the bible doesn’t pull any punches when it describes unfaithfulness to God. The people of Israel are described as prostitutes seeking the provision offered by other gods to meet their needs. An idol or false god wasn’t just a matter of religious observance. It met a need, such as more rain for the farms in a land that lacked other irrigation options. An idol was a means to fill a need, to pay the bills, or to make the pain go away.
You may not have a statue you bow in front of in a temple or an altar on a hillside dedicated to a god that promises rain, fertility, or peace. But there are plenty of other wrong ways to meet your needs, to take care of your problems, and to dull the pain and fear of life. Whatever you rely on rather than God will fast become an idol that will make more demands on your life and claim your allegiance. Over time, you can find that you can rely on your own means (and idols)—or you can surrender your future to God alone. You can’t keep up that kind of division forever.
Today may be the moment to make a choice once and for all.
Prayer: Lord, teach me to trust in You completely, with an undivided heart.
