“For thou O Lord, art a shield for me, my glory, the lifter of my head…” The words to this song have been running through my head over and over and over and….

Our lives are richly blessed. We have three beautiful children, a large enough home to accomodate us all comfortably, transportation, and plenty to eat. My husband is blessed with an excellent & stable job in an area where that is uncommon. We attend a wonderful church full of kind people and we have great friends.

Sometimes life has a way of distracting us from our blessings…for nearly a year now, my father has been seriously ill, and we have been helping my mother care for him. He has been in and out of the hospital more times than I can count, and I have gone from having faith that he would be healed to hoping God would be kind enough to take him on home, and back to having faith again. It is an emotional and spiritual rollercoaster. Add to that, that my mother’s own strength, both physically and emotionally, is quickly waning. She is no “spring chicken” herself, and this is taking a toll on her, so of course my fear has been that somehow I would end up losing them both. So this year has been hard for me…for my family…sometimes that hardship is all I can see….

Pretend for a moment, that you are standing at the edge of a cliff, overlooking a vast and beautiful mountain range…you are taking in the scenery, breathing in deeply the cool, crisp mountain air…listening to birds chirp…just enjoying the moment…when suddenly, you feel a sharp pain in your shoulder…Ouch!!

You grab your shoulder and look down to see what has caused the pain, and…Oh! Another sharp pain…you put your hand to the back of your neck and feel a little insect there…cautiously opening your hand, you find a buzzing, angry hornet inside…flinging it on the ground, you look around with a slightly panicky feeling to see if there are anymore hornets on the horizon…

It’s just a little sting. They’re just little insects. But with just a little bite, you have lost sight of the mountains, the coolness of the air, the richness that surrounds you…the beauty hasn’t left, but you have been distracted from it.

It’s those little insects, those little bites, those little stings, the little darts…they can make us lose focus…

And in those times I hum to myself…”For thou Oh Lord, art a shield for me, my glory, the lifter of my head….”

Psa 9:1 I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.

Psa 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

Hi Coconut.

You remind me of "Jesus" in the threads you post. I could follow you all around this site learning lots from your contributions to this site.

The mountain I pictured me standing on was "Mount Scott" in Oklahoma. It was the best! I had never seen such beauty, in my life! Unbelievable! Yet, I know what you mean by little things getting in the way. I did not get stung, but was warned of some venemous snakes that lived in the rocks I was standing on, there, and that was enough for me. lol :o)

But you are so right, little things (even, sometimes, silly things) can cause us fear and make us back away from and then end us up feeling as if we have nothing to be thankful for.

Here's a part of a song that came to my mind:

"Count your blessings, name them one by one.
Count your blessings, see what God hath done."

I think I'll go do that, right now.

See you around, :o)
