"Hope deffered maketh the heart sick" Prov 13:12
When Pandora (of legend fame) opened her famous box out of her feminine curiosity, all benifits fled, but HOPE remained. This ancient story enshrines a basic truth that life without hope would be poor and very disappointing
Hope's Determination. Optimism lifts the future with prospects bright and cheerful. Youth is the age of hope. Bright visions fill the heart of the young! The future is full of promise and life is enjoyable. The thoughts of the young are long.....reaching out and forward; long thoughts, filled with sunshine and beams of expectation.
Hope's Deferment. The reality of middle-life often belies the hope's of youth. How sick the heart can becomes when denied those early expectations! Depression can numb the mind and lower physical vitality. Burdens are hard to bear and gloom descends upon the disappointed heart. It was in this mood that the Earl of Beaconsfield wrote "youth is a blunder, manhood a struggle,and old age a regret" But it need not be so. God is faithful, He will lead through the dark times unto brighter days.
Hope's Delight What a joy it is when a dream is realised. The jaded spirit revives. The weary look departs, faltering steps are quickened "When the desire cometh.... it is a tree of life"
Christianity is a religeon of hope A hope that extends through life and beyond the grave, "The hope of eternal life "that we might become heirs, having the hope of eternal life" Titus 3 : 7. This hope is an anchor of the soul "we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us" Heb 6 : 18 keeping us secure in the wildest storms, it is a life-buoy which prevents that sinking feeling. "for in this hope we are saved" Rom 8:24.
It is a life-line which sustains us in all danger and in woe. The "Hope of Glory" "God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you the hope of glory" Col 1:27 This hope brings the brightness of heaven to our earthly existance.
By hope we enjoy summer roses in the winter frost,....morning rays in evening shadows,....refreshing dew in times of drought. All this comes to us when we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. His salvation not only gives us promise in this life, but also of that which is to come "physical training" has some value, says the scripture, "but godliness has value for all things, both the present life and the life to come" 1 Tim 4:8.
A promise to be fully realised at the second advent.
