HOOKED? #119 - May 20, 2007
The legal sale of alcoholic beverages and the illegal sale of all sorts of drugs are million dollar businesses. Perhaps you don't appreciate alcohol and drugs being linked together like this. But they both have one thing in common. Those who sell them are dependent upon people like you getting hooked. That's right! Hooked!
It's amusing to hear folks say they can stop the regular use of drugs and alcohol at any time. But when they go cold turkey, it's another story. They find out how dependent they are. The Bible warns, "Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise" (Proverbs 20:1). Why is it a real lack of wisdom to get drunk? Putting every other consideration aside, getting drunk is the first step to addiction. Don't laugh. The Bible warns you not to be "addicted to wine" (1 Timothy 3:3).
If you can be addicted to wine, addiction to stronger drink and to drugs is a real threat. There are a lot of people who are only interested in making some easy money off of your addiction to either alcohol or drugs. The Bible is right about strong drink. "When it goes down smoothly; at the last it bites like a serpent" (Proverbs 23:31-32). Hooked on drugs or alcohol? Turn to God.
