The father instantly cried out, "I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!" Mark 9:24 NLT
The words spoken in today’s verse came from the mouth of a man who desperately needed Jesus to act on behalf of his demon-possessed son. He had no doubt heard of the man who had healed many sick, lame, and demon-possessed people. But still, he struggled with unbelief.
At a glance, we may wonder how a man who had heard so much about Jesus could possibly doubt Him. But maybe we couldn’t assume that he had a hard time believing Jesus could help people. Maybe we should look at his words as an admission that he wondered if Jesus could and would help him.
The thought of speaking to God with this kind of honesty scares many of us. There are things, after all, we wish we could hide from Him, things we don’t even want to admit to ourselves. But when we come to the end of ourselves and still need God to do something great for us and within us, it’s just the kind of heart-to-heart honesty He desires.
Do you sometimes find yourself doubting that God wants to do something great for you? If so, then confess your doubt to Him. He can handle it, and He can also open your heart and mind to what He has planned for you.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to be honest with You when I struggle in my faith.
