If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9
Over the years, there have been numerous movements within Christianity teaching that believers can attain sinless perfection here on earth. However, the apostle John, speaking under the inspiration of God's Spirit, warned Christians against believing they had attained sinlessness.
Today's verse begins, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." You could easily personalize this passage this way: If I'm honest with myself, I have to admit that I sin. Whether it's in my thoughts, in my attitudes, or in my actions…I sin."
But this verse concludes with an amazing promise: If you confess your sin, God will forgive you. This calls for some serious and honest self-appraisal, and that is why King David prayed, "Search me, God, and know my heart….See if there is any offensive way in me" (Psalm 139:23-24 NIV).
All sin is a huge deal to God. But you can be grateful that His willingness to forgive is even bigger.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for loving me in spite of my sins and imperfections. Thank You also for forgiving me when I simply confess those sins to You.
