In the old testament, the phrase "Holy Spirit" is only used in a few places.
( Psalms 51:11; Isaiah 63:10-11; )
It seems not everyone had the Holy Spirit in the old testament.
In Gen 6:3; it says God saw the wickedness in the world and declared... "My Spirit shall not strive with
man forever"... because he is flesh and blood;
It goes on to say the age of men won't exceed 120 years.
As far as I know, not many, if any have ever lived past 120 in this century.

Certain people did have the Holy Spirit. It seems David had it, and was worried about God taking the Holy Spirit away from him. ( Psalms 51:11; )

In Isa 63:1-6; we see the wrath of God upon the nations.
But in verses 7-14; God's mercies are revealed. There are prophesies of Jesus hidden here if you know
what you're looking for.
In verse 10... it says the people rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit.
So God turned against them and became their enemy. He fought against them.

But in verse 11, the people remembered the days of Moses... and they asked themselves...
Where is He who put His Holy Spirit in the midst of them?

.. to be continued ...

In the new Testament...
John the Baptist is baptizing people. Why was he doing this?

John the Baptist himself was prophesied in Isaiah. (this is quoted in Matt 3:3; )
John the Baptist preached repentance... ( Matt 3:2; etc.. )

The Pharisee's and Sadducee's wanted to be baptized... ( Matt 3:7; )
But John asked them... "Who warned you of the wrath to come?" He even called them a brood of vipers. ( Matt 3:7; )
John told they had to bear the fruit of repentance. ( Matt 3:8; )
He goes on to tell them that the trees that do not bear good fruit, will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

This bearing of fruit... is mentioned about a dozen times in the New Testament... more about that later.
But I would ask you to consider... what does bearing the fruit of repentance look like?

.In verse 11, John says he baptizes with water... "for repentance".
But someone is coming after him.... ( Jesus) and He will will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Another prophesy of John the Baptist from Isaiah is mentioned in Mark 1:2-3;

John preached a baptism of repentance, for the forgiveness of sins. ( Mark 1:4; )

Now it may seem that I've gotten of track here... what does John the Baptist have to do with the Holy Spirit?
I'm getting to that.

Just like in Matt 3:11; John says in Mark 1:8; that Jesus will baptize them with the Holy Spirit.

The point here is... John was preparing the way... ( Mark 1:2; )
This was also prophesied in Isa 40:3; ) He was preparing the way for Jesus.

He was preparing the way for Jesus by preaching repentance. One of the things baptism is.. is an outward
expression of repentance. John preached a baptism for repentance.
If you're not going to repent... don't get baptized. ( Many people don't get baptized )
But if you're not going to repent... then the way for Jesus hasn't been prepared to your heart.
Repentance comes first.

All through the New Testament... John the baptist and the disciples, and Jesus preached repentance.
After you have repented... and only after... then you can be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

We can't stop sinning on our own power. It requires God/Jesus/Holy Spirit in us in order to overcome.
But the decision to repent... that comes before the Holy Spirit. John baptized in water, but Jesus
baptized in the Holy Spirit. John prepared the way.

... to be continued ..

Repentance itself won't save you. Neither will being baptized save you.
But repentance isn't the only thing required to be baptized. In Acts 8.. the disciple Philip runs
across an Ethiopian Eunuch. They discuss a passage from Isaiah that is yet another prophesy of Jesus.
After this the Ethiopian asks Philip.. why can't I be baptized? ( Acts 8:36; )
And Philip tells him... "If you believe with all your heart that Jesus is the Son of God"... then you can be baptized.

Believing in Jesus is also required.

But back to the Holy Spirit.....

When Jesus was on the earth... no one had received the Holy Spirit.
(well John the Baptist had it ( Luke 1:15; ) , and of course Jesus had it, perhaps Elizabeth (Luke 1:41; ) and Zacharias ( Luke 1:67; ) )
But no one else really had it.....
In fact the Holy Spirit could not come to man while Jesus was on the earth. ( John 7:39; )
Jesus said that unless He goes away the Holy Spirit will not come... ( John 16:7; )

... and yet John the Baptist said Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit.

... to be continued ...

In the book of Acts... we see four instances were people got filled with the Holy Spirit.

In every case, they had already been believers for a while first.
In Acts 1:13; we have the upper room. This room is full of believers... they are even trying to pick another disciple
to take Judas's place. There were about 120 people in this room ( Acts 1:15; )
The disciples are here... Mary the mother of Jesus is here... and a number of other believers.

But it isn't untiol Acts 2... that they are filled with the Holy Spirit. Some of these people had been following
Jesus for the last 3 years... yet they weren't filled with the Holy Spirit. (the Holy Spirit couldn't come yet ).
All of the disciples had been baptized previously. ( John 4:1-2; )

In Acts 8 we see that some Samaritans had received the word of God ( Acts 8:14; )
They had already been baptized in the name of Jesus ( Acts 8:16; )
But yet they hadn't received the Holy Spirit yet... Peter and John came down and prayed for them
that they might receive the Holy Spirit. ( Acts 8:15; )
and they did receive the Holy Spirit... ( Acts 8:17; )

In Acts 10.. we see a Roman centurion named Cornelius...
He was a devout... God fearing man. ( Acts 10:2; ) He was a believer who prayed to God.

But yet.. he hadn't received the Holy Spirit yet...
It isn't until Cornelius and his family meet with Peter, that they are filled with the Holy Spirit. ( Acts 10:44-46; )

After they are filled with the Holy Spirit... they are invited to be baptized with water. ( Acts 10:47-48; )

In Acts 19:1; Paul comes across some disciples in Ephesus.
They also had already been baptized into repentance... ( Acts 19:3-4; )
But they hadn't been baptized in the name of Jesus yet, so Paul does this for them... ( Acts 19:5; )
... and then... finally... they receive the Holy Spirit ( Acts 19:6-7; )

.... it seems no one in the new testament received the Holy Spirit at the instant they became a believer...
it seems salvation and having the Holy Spirit are two different things.

... to be continued ...

It seems the Holy Spirit isn't given to everyone immediately.
It seems there are conditions for receiving the Holy Spirit.

In Acts 5:32; it says the Holy Spirit is given to those who "obey" God.
In Luke 11:13; It says God gives the Holy Spirit to those who "ask" Him.

... to be continued ...

With all of this in mind... I have a question.
Is being born of the Spirit... the same thing as being filled with the Holy Spirit?

In John 3:5; Jesus tells Nicodemus that unless you are born of the Spirit... you cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Some believe that being born of the Spirit is different from being filled with the Holy Spirit.
I wonder if anyone has scriptures about this?

.... to be continued ...

A verse you often hear quoted is Heb 13:5; that says God will never leave or forsake us.
This is actually a quote of Deut 31:6; God said the same thing in the old testament.

While it may be true that God never left the Israelites, they left Him and became His enemy.

Isa 63:8; For He said, “Surely, they are My people, Sons who will not deal falsely.”
So He became their Savior.
Isa 63:9; In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the angel of His presence saved them;
In His love and in His mercy He redeemed them, And He lifted them and carried them all the days of old.
Isa 63:10; But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit;
Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them.

They rebelled and grieved the Holy Spirit. It is possible to do this today. We are warned about this in Eph 4:30;
and also Acts 7:51; Be careful about resisting the Holy Spirit.

Other warnings about the Holy Spirit are found in Matt 12:31; Mark 3:28-30; Luke 12:10; and Heb 10:29;

What is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit? Jesus explains this in Mark 3...

Mark 3:22; The scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”
Mark 3:23; And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?
Mark 3:24; If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

Mark 3:28; “Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;
Mark 3:29; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”—
Mark 3:30; because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Jesus is casting out demons. The scribes are saying that Jesus is casting out demons by the power of Beelzebul.
(the ruler of the demons). Then Jesus asks them... why would Satan cast himself out? A kingdom divided can not
stand.
Jesus tells them that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven... because they were saying He had an unclean spirit.
( verse 30 ). Be careful about saying things from God are from Satan. Be careful about saying things from Satan are from
God. This is what the scribes were doing.

The Holy Spirit is mentioned over 250 times in the New testament...

There are only a few things mentioned more often than the Holy Spirit.

In Acts 2:38; Peter says....
"Repent... and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ...
for the forgiveness of your sins; ... and THEN you will receive the gift
of the Holy Spirit. (emphasis added).

If we don't repent.. and we aren't baptized in Christ...
there's a good chance we won't receive the Holy Spirit.

But what does having the Holy Spirit do for us?

The Spirit can lead us places, and tell us where to go...
Matt 4:1; Acts 8:29; Acts 11:12; Acts 13:4;

The Holy Spirit can also tell us... where NOT to go...
Acts 16:6-7; Acts 21:4;

The Holy Spirit can tell us what words to speak in certain situations...
Matt 10:20; Luke 12:12; 1 Cor 12:3;

The Holy Spirit can cast out demons...
Matt 12:31;

The Holy Spirit can give you a spiritual office in the church...
Acts 20:28;

The Spirit can give us prophesies...
Mark 12:36; Acts 1:16; Acts 4:25; Acts 11:28; Acts 28:25; 2 Pet 1:21;

The Holy Spirit fulfills the requirements of the law, for those
who are walking in the Spirit...
Rom 8:2-5;

The Holy Spirit can anoint us to do God's work...
Luke 4:18; Acts 13:2;

The Holy Spirit gives us life...
John 6:63; Rom 8:11; 2 Cor 3:6; Gal 6:8;

The Holy Spirit gives us discernment of the truth...
John 14:17; John 16:13;

The Holy Spirit can help, teach us, and reveal things to us...
John 14:26; John 15:26; 1 Cor 2:10-15; Eph 3:5; 1 Tim 4:1; 1 Pet 1:12;

The Holy Spirit gives us power...
Acts 1:8; Rom 15:19; 1 Cor 2:4;

The Holy Spirit gives us "the gifts of the Spirit".
1 Cor 12:4-11; 1 Cor 14:1; Heb 2:4;

The Holy Spirit gives us the fruit of the Spirit...
Gal 5:22-24;

(the difference between a gift and a fruit... is that one is given to you.
the other is something produced by you).

The Holy Spirit gives us dreams and visions...
Acts 2:17-18; Acts 10:19;

The Holy Spirit can give us boldness..
Acts 4:31;

The Holy Spirit gives us liberty (freedom)...
2 Cor 3:17;

The Holy Spirit can be a witness to our walk...
Acts 5:32; Rom 8:16; Rom 9:1;

The Holy Spirit can give us wisdom...
Acts 6:10;

The Holy Spirit can comfort us...
Acts 9:31;

The Holy Spirit is our helper...
John 14:16; John 14:26; John 16:7; John 15:26;

A helper doesn't do things for you... a helper helps you do them.

The Holy Spirit helps our weaknesses...
Rom 8:26;

The Holy Spirit intercedes for us...
Rom 8:26-27;

The Holy Spirit gives us peace and joy...
Rom 14:17;

The Holy Spirit sanctifies us...
Rom 15:16; 2 Thess 2:17; 1 Pet 1:2;

The Holy Spirit washes us and renews us...
Titus 3:5; Heb 9:14;

The Holy Spirit dwells in some...
1 Cor 3:16; 1 Cor 6:19;

John the Baptist said he didn't know who Jesus was, until the Holy Spirit
descended upon Jesus... ( John 1:32-33; )

The one offensive weapon we have in spiritual warfare is the "sword of the Spirit", which is the word of God (Bible)...
Eph 6:17;

There is more... but if these aren't enough reason for you to desire the Holy Spirit, what else would you want?

If you are fearful, lost, without joy, without peace, weak, have no power,
have no freedom, have no vision, have no discernment...
Maybe it's time to ask yourself why you are lacking these things?
Luke 11:13;

I love this study, I have done a similar one, but I am only seeing "Holy Spirit" 7 times in the whole bible: There are references to the Spirit of God, the seven spirits, the seven spirits of Got, etc... but only 7 times does "holy spirit" occur...

Psalms 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

Isaiah 63:10 ¶ But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

Isaiah 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

1 Thessalonians 4:8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

I, like many other Christians, have also wondered what it means to blaspheme the Holy Ghost. I do think your idea is correct about not believing that those things of God are of Satan, and those things of Satan are of God. I also believe that the Holy Ghost is tied very closely to the words of God, how else would we receive it, except of course by hearing? (Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God). What happens if we decide that we don't like, understand, or agree with what God says and we decide to change it? Do we blaspheme the Holy Ghost by leaning to our own understanding, and philosophies to try to make sense of words we should accept with faith? If someone blasphemes the Holy Ghost unknowingly, are thy accountable? I don't know. God knows. (1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.)

Let us pray that we can just accept His will with peace, regardless of our own wants and expectations.

Matthew 12:31 ¶ Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

Mark 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

Luke 12:10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

(I see Holy Ghost 90 times)

I hope this has offered some insight. God bless!

Interesting... in the KJV.. "holy Spirit" (small H interestingly enough)... 11 times.
Holy Ghost 89 times.... (in the KJV)
The word spirit is in the NT 287 times... (KJV)
However, not every occurrence is the Holy Spirit. Matt 5:3; for example is about your human spirit.
Matt 3:16; doesn't expressly say "Holy" Spirit... but because the word spirit has an uppercase "S" it is
generally considered to mean the Holy Spirit.

spirit = human spirit. Spirit = Holy Spirit.

So if you add the verses about the holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost, and the Spirit (uppercase S). Even KJV
has well over 250 verses.

In the NASB... the word ghost does not appear...
However the phrase Holy Spirit appears about 90 times

I love searching the word of God!
I pray you keep searching as well! I'll gladly compare findings. :D

I have my bible with me. (Holy Bible on the front, authorized kjv title page) I use this in conjunction with King James Pure Bible Search (online or free download) (to make sure one matches up with the other).

I no longer read other versions (though I did for years) for various reasons, but I do find the word/occurrence stats throughout other versions intriguing so please, do share all your findings!

God bless; look forward to hearing from you!

So we see that grieving Holy Spirit should be avoided ( Eph 4:30; ) this has high consequences.. ( Isa 63:10; )
Also resisting the Holy Spirit should be avoided ( Acts 7:51; )
Insulting the Holy Spirit is not a good idea. ( Heb 10:29; )
Blaspheming the Holy Spirit is definitely a bad thing. ( Matt 12:31; Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10; )
Lying to the Holy Spirit is another thing to avoid. ( Acts 5:3; )

But we can also quench the Holy Spirit... ( 1 Thess 5:19; )
The word quench here "sbenummi". It is a verb. It is the same word used in extinguishing a fire.
If we try hard enough... we can put the fire out... so to speak.

Yes the bible tells us: quench not the Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.

I agree: Quench = extinguish

I find this interesting because we read that Jesus Christ lights every man that comes into the world. (John 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.) I think that many seek to put out that flame in those who know and love the LORD. Have you ever thought about how in Buddhism, the ultimate goal is to reach nirvana? (This seems to literally indicate that the light in you would be blown out).

Origin of NIRVANA
Sanskrit nirvāṇa, literally, act of extinguishing, from nis- out + vāti it blows — more at wind
First Known Use: 1801

Most Christians believe in something called the Holy Trinity.
Father - Son - Spirit.
It seems many churches mostly talk about the Son. That is good because Jesus is the only way to the Father.
No one will be saved without Jesus. Yet the Father and the Spirit are equally God.

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity. Person... not an impersonal force.
But a person. Impersonal forces do not have emotions.... yet the Holy Spirit can be grieved and insulted.
Does your church ever preach about the Holy Spirit? If not.. why not?

I have not checked every single Bible version... but in the 3 translations I use the most....
The Holy Spirit is never called "it", but always "He".
For example... John 15:26; says "He" will bear witness. (the Holy Spirit)
John 16:7; says I will send "Him" to you.

There are dozens of similar verses... but all say He or Him... none say "it".

You have peaked my interest, so to warn you, this is a long one: :D (Studies like this are neat to keep if you print them out and double-check/compare with your own).
Most Christians believe in something called the Holy Trinity

This is my understanding of the Holy Trinity:

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Holy Spirit: (Like I stated earlier, I only found this phrase in the AV 7 times, and if your search is case sensitive, "Holy Spirit" is only there once; holy is capitalized when Jesus speaks).

The phrases "Holy Ghost" and "(S)pirit are found together in 5 verses:

Luke 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
John 1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
John 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
1 Corinthians 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

Person... not an impersonal force

I do not quite understand or agree with this idea that God, other than having lived in bodily form as Jesus, is a person like you and I. I think this topic of God being person-like is a different study entirely, but I'd be glad to do some research to share my ideas for another thread.

(I do not believe that any of us could even begin to fathom who God is, and how his image appears; the bible does offer some insight into this matter).

God bless!

LOL... a lot of questions and thoughts all at once.
I will try to keep up.

This is my understanding of the Holy Trinity:

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

So OK... I mentioned the Father and the Holy Spirit... those two are the same.
I said Jesus... you said the word. But who is the word? ( John 1:1-4; John 1:14; tells us who the word is )
So from my perspective... we are still in agreement here.

Holy Spirit: (Like I stated earlier, I only found this phrase in the AV 7 times, and if your search is case sensitive, "Holy Spirit" is only there once; holy is capitalized when Jesus speaks).

The King James is not a version I use frequently. It is a translation of a translation.
However, even though it doesn't capitalize the Holy Spirit as other versions do. I still take the Holy Spirit
mentioned in Psa 51:11; Isa 63:10; Is 63:11; Eph 1:13; Eph 4:30; and 1 Thess 4:8; to be the same Holy Spirit
that Jesus speaks of in Luke 11:13;

There aren't multiple holy Spirits... there is only one. 1 Cor 12:13; Eph 2:18; Eph 4:4;

The phrases "Holy Ghost" and "(S)pirit are found together in 5 verses:

The Holy Ghost is the Holy Spirit. There is no difference.
Just because both terms are used doesn't mean they are separate.
For example Gen 1:4; and Gen 1:10; has the word God twice in the same verse... that doesn't mean there are two Gods.

Isaiah 11:2 And (1)the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of (2)wisdom and (3)understanding, the spirit of (4)counsel and (5)might, the spirit of (6)knowledge and of the (7)fear of the LORD;

New International Version
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him-- the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD--

New Living Translation

I have 16 Bible translations... none of them divide the spirits here into seven different spirits.
At most... four... more likely three.
There is not a Spirit of wisdom and a separate Spirit of understanding...
But a single Spirit of wisdom and understanding. So I personally don't think that Isa 11:2;
is talking about the same Spirits in Rev 3:1; Rev 4:5; and Rev 5:6;

There is always a difference between "The Spirit" and "a spirit".
Just like there is a difference between the The Son of God, and the sons of God.
All Christians and some angels can be called sons of God. But there is only one Son of God.
The KJV doesn't do a very good job distinguishing the difference with capitalization as far
as the Holy Spirit goes, but does a much better job with the Son of God.

For example is we take the Spirits you mentioned in Isa 11:2;
There are mentioned in other places... ( Exod 28:3; Deut 34:9; 1 Cor 12:8; 1 Cor 12:9; etc... ) for example.
Some of these are gifts of the Spirit.. 1 Cor 12:4-11;
Some of these are fruits of the Spirit.. Gal 5:22-23;
So in a sense you could say someone has a spirit of deceit, or a spirit of mean-ness,
Or you could say someone has a spirit of kindness, or a spirit of wisdom.
But certain spirits that we have come from "The" Spirit (Holy Spirit).
Other spirits people have (spirit of pride, selfishness, arrogance... etc... are not spirits from God).
