HIS AGONY, OUR ECSTASY #287 - July 22, 2007

Christ endured tremendous suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Bible says, "And His being in agony, He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground" (Luke 22:44). Such turmoil is difficult to comprehend.

As Christ looked ahead to the cross and the agonizing death it represented, His mental anguish was enormous. Christ knew He was to suffer an excruciatingly cruel and humiliating death. In the face of this death, coagulated blood was actually forced through His pores and fell to the ground. Behind the mental and physical strain there was immense emotional stress. Christ was overcome with a mixture of grief and horror. In addition, there was infinite spiritual torment. Christ looked into the furnace of wrath against sin. He knew He must bear the fury of death as the wages for sin.

But Christ endured this agony for people like you and me. He endured mental torment so those who trust in His sacrifice for sin might have health of mind. He bore physical agony so people like us might enjoy physical bliss in heaven. He faced emotional grief so that those who trust in Him would have emotional freedom. He suffered spiritual separation from the love of His Father so that those trusting Him would never be separated from the love of God.

Amen brother Chad. He knows all the suffering we will ever go through in this life too. He has endured it all himself. What a mighty loving God we serve.

We will praise Him in the storm like Casting Crowns say in their song.

God bless you for sharing this with us today.
