But if you fail to keep your word, then you will have sinned against the LORD, and you may be sure that your sin will find you out. Numbers 32:23 NLT
As the Israelites drew closer to the Promised Land, the tribes of Reuben and Gad saw an excellent opportunity for themselves in the area south of the Sea of Galilee, just outside the Promised Land. It was a great area to raise their families and to farm and keep their livestock. The two tribes wanted this land, so they approached Moses and made him an offer: if the men of Reuben and Gad would lead the Israelites in taking the Promised Land, they could then settle the land they desired.
It was an audacious offer, and Moses accepted it. But he also warned them that if they didn’t hold up their end of the agreement, they would be sinning against God, and God would know it…and they would suffer consequences.
There are two things we need to remember about sin, the first being that you can never hide it from God. Moses himself wrote, “You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence” (Psalm 90:8). Secondly, sin—whether it’s failing to keep your word, sexual sin, or idolatry—always has consequences.
God takes all sin very seriously—and so should we.
Prayer: Lord, keep my heart soft and receptive to Your Word so that I always remember the seriousness of sin.
