I'm excited that you're asking for guidance. I'll pass along what was suggested to me when I came to Christ in 1983 (which I found to be very good advice): Start with the gospels. They introduce Jesus and His teachings. Next read the epistles. Finally, read the Old Testament followed by the Book of Revelation. Its important, in my view, that the Old Testament be read only after you've read the New Testament because without some grounding in the New Testament, the Old Testament is little more than a boring history book and can give one a skewed view of God's motives.
I would advise that you read the word systematically vs jumping all around due to frustration from lack of understanding---Don't be afraid to mark up your bible---Use color pens and hi-lighters at first----Always have a pen in hand to capture your thoughts and make notes in the margins----Choose a bible with at least one inch blank margins and verse references in the middle----Use red ink for the passages you don't understand-----My first bible seemed like it had more red markings than anything else, (that's fine don't worry about it)-------Start with the gospel of John and then go through the rest of the New Testament---Come back to Matthew and read through again---Due Mark and Luke the same way-------But keep it systematic----For side reading go to the Psalms and Proverbs as they can be very comforting------Even though you'll have a lot of red underscoring don't give up or think about quitting or listen to the accousations the evil one will whisper in your ear----------The bible is sort of like a huge puzzle made up of many smaller puzzles----As you receive revelation on one part of it, you'll realize it fits together perfectly with another revelation He has opened to you----As this starts to take place you'll find more and more satisfaction in studying and become quite excited as you begin to see the larger puzzle parts fitting together and making new living pictures-----Continue to ask for help and pray for insight and understanding.
