Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying: "You only have I known of all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities." Amos 3:1-2 NKJV
A certain high school football coach was known for being a strict disciplinarian who held his players to high standards of behavior on and off the field. But when his own son was old enough to play for him, it seemed like he was stricter on the boy than on the other players.
The father/coach told his son/player early, “Son, it might seem like I’m harder on you than I am on the other players. But it has to be that way. You’re not just one of my players—you’re my son, and I want the very best for you.”
Our heavenly Father is like that with us, isn’t He? The bible teaches that God disciplines His own people as an earthly father disciplines his children (see Hebrews 12:4-11). But this isn’t God being hard on us just because He can. It’s because He loves us and holds us to the standards He’s set for His own family.
Prayer: Father in heaven, I don’t enjoy it when You discipline me for my sins. But I thank You for doing just that, for it shows me that You have chosen to love me as one of Your very own.
