There are a couple threads in TJ that speak to these phrases...Gossip being the most prevalent....Gossip is bad! No doubt...But what of profanity (evil speaking)? Cuss words are not the obvious problem with Christians so much....Most succeed in eliminating this coarse vocabulary...But profanity is rife among us! So what is profanity?
Ephesians 4:31 (CJB)
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, violent assertiveness (profane, evil speaking) and slander, along with all spitefulness.

1 Timothy 6:20 (CJB)
20 Oh, Timothy! Keep safe what has been entrusted to you. Turn away from the ungodly babblings (profane, evil speaking) and the argumentative opposition of what is falsely called “knowledge.”

2 Timothy 2:16
But shun profane (ungodly) and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Hebrews 12:16 (CJB)
16 and that no one is sexually immoral, or godless (profane )like Esav, who in exchange for a single meal gave up his rights as the firstborn.

So every word spoken that is in opposition to God's Word is profane...Evil speaking...Avoid it!!
What words? "Oh! We're all going to die"! "I'm soo sick" "I'm going broke." "God will get you for that!" They contradict what God says....Profanity...

What do you think? How often are we guilty of profanity?

Cursing and swearing seem to be a "lost sin" to many.
We hear so many word's in almost EVERY movie (unless it's a Christian movie), on EVERY television show.
In fact I have even seen them in newspaper articles and even on news reports.
Amazingly even once or twice here on TJ. I think some people don't even know the words they are
saying are profanity and curse words.

Matt 26:74; Mark 14:71; James 3:8-9;

Even taking the name of the Lord is profanity... I think I hear OMG about 20 times a day.
Oh My God... God is not name to play around with and take lightly.
I also hear Jeez... usually used in digust... Jesus is the name above all names. Not a name to toss
around like curse word. Then there is the popular... "Jesus H Christ:. I'm not sure what the H stands for.
(Some Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches have IHS monogramed on certain religious artifacts).
Saying this is a monogram of the name of Jesus.

Exod 20:7; Deut 5:11; Psalms 139:20;

Still other's even use the name of God to curse others...

There are at least a dozen words that were never spoken in public a generation or two ago. Now they are just common place words, frequently seen on facebook. I've even heard people say them in "professional" job interviews.

But I don't think society and facebook define what profanity is. God does. Some of us may have forgotten what
profanity and cursing is... but God hasn't.

Even saying "damn you" or "go to hell" is cursing someone. Perhaps not literally in the sense
that you can cause someone to be damned or go to hell. But in saying it and wishing it upon someone.

Lev 10:10; Lev 21:6; Lev 22:32; Prov 30:9; Jerem 34:16; Ezek 36:23; etc...
How many times do we hear... G_ddam? Lev 19:12;
Letting our children follow false religions is a profanity... Lev 20:3;

Lev 10:10; Lev 21:6; Lev 22:32; Prov 30:9; Jerem 34:16; Ezek 36:23; etc...
How many times do we hear... G_ddam? Lev 19:12;
Letting our children follow false religions is a profanity... Lev 20:3;

I've always separated cursing, swearing, and bad language...Then there is profanity....Using God's name as an expletive,or speaking contrary to God's Word....

Cursing is speaking contrary to God's Word too, It's profane....The words we speak have power..Creative power..That's why God says we will answer for every idle (careless) word we speak. We speak sickness, we speak death, we speak financial woes, we speak all manner if evil things and think nothing of it....Profanity....

Swearing is different...."By God I'll....." "By Jove!" Swearing is basing your word on something, or someone who is (supposedly)higher than you...James 5:12 (CJB)
12 Above all, brothers, stop swearing oaths — not “By heaven,” not “By the earth,” and not by any other formula; rather, let your “Yes” be simply “Yes” and your “No” simply “No,” so that you won’t fall under condemnation.

Bad language is all the low caliber language people use as expletives...four letter words etc. These words tend to pull us down and make us look lowbrow...They also tend to change the way we think..to the negative...

What we do not seem to understand is that our words DO have the same creative power that God used to create all that is....

Is it possible to use cursing in a good light? As in just making a simple joke.

Wow...Your key word here is 'cursing' as opposed to blessing?
Satan really does not care what you mean, the spoken word is what he acts on. That is also what the good angels act on. So....what do you want? Blessings or cursings?

Ephesians 5:4 (CJB)
4 Also out of place are obscenity and stupid talk or coarse language; instead, you should be giving thanks.

Ecclesiastes 10:12-13 (CJB)
12 The words spoken by the wise bring them favor,
but the lips of a fool swallow him up.
13 What he says starts with foolishness
and ends with wicked madness.

Is it possible to use cursing in a good light? As in just making a simple joke.

Matthew12:36-37 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement.
For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

James 1:26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this one's
religion is useless.

Matthew 15:10 When he had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, Hear and understand. Not what goes into the mouth
defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.

Matthew 15:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed
evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man
, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.

There is no separation of cursing, swearing, or profane words. Our God sees them all as not good and a sin. As followers of Jesus we should not want any word that does not glorify Him to come from our mouths at all. If Jesus is in our hearts and we are made new in Him and He is the one who takes all darkness and sin from us why would we want to put anything into our mouths but praise for Him. We must be careful of what we take in, what we hear, and what we say. We are to be an example of Jesus and He did not go around swearing whether in anger or just joking. His heart was pure and out of it came the words of God The Father. Even when He overturned the tables in the temple, he was angry yet was using God's word. How many of us can say we are like that? Not many and that includes myself as well.

We need to watch what we say and how we say it. If we are truly right with God we will strive to let our words be words of kindness and love not words that are fowl, filled with hatred, anger and bitterness. God commands us to never take his name in vain, but he also says for every idle word we will answer to him for it. This includes swearing, making fun of others, name calling, using your words to bring down instead of build up, using swear words whether in anger or in a joke. We as Christians need to be an example of the Love of Jesus to this world. This coming year lets examine our hearts and make an effort to use our mouths only to spread the love of God. If we get angry and we all do, lets stop walk away, take a deep breath, and say a silent prayer that God help us to control our mouths. More than ever this world needs to see Jesus and it starts with us.

God bless you all and very happy and blessed new year to you all!

Good stuff....I've always separated the types but as you say...They are all rotten speaking which will bring rotten results...
Words Control Your Life

The Bible teaches that words, especially ones you say, are important.

Proverbs 18:20-21 (CJB)
20 A person’s belly will be filled with the fruit of his mouth;
with what his lips produce he will be filled.
21 The tongue has power over life and death;
those who indulge it must eat its fruit.

Isaiah 59:21 (CJB)
21 “And as for me,” says Adonai,
“this is my covenant with them:
my Spirit, who rests on you,
and my words which I put in your mouth
will not depart from your mouth
or from the mouth of your children,
or from the mouth of your children’s children,
now or ever,” says Adonai.

What You Say Is What You Get
Mark 11:23 (CJB)
23 Yes! I tell you that whoever does not doubt in his heart but trusts that what he says will happen can say to this mountain, ‘Go and throw yourself into the sea!’ and it will be done for him.

Jesus said that you will have whatever you say -- dependent on believing and not doubting. Think of that. What you say determines what you get in life. It did for the children of Israel. And the Bible says the things which happened to them are lessons for us.

Numbers 14:28 (CJB)
28 Tell them this: ‘As surely as I live, Adonai swears, as surely as you have spoken in my ears, I will do this to you:

Proverbs 6:2 (CJB)
2 you have been snared by the words of your mouth,
caught by the words of your own mouth.

Control Your Words
1 Peter 4:11 (CJB)
11 if someone speaks, let him speak God’s words; if someone serves, let him do so out of strength that God supplies; so that in everything God may be glorified through Yeshua the Messiah — to him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen.

When you speak what the Bible says, you are speaking the very words of God. Anything contrary to what the Bible says, should never be spoken by a Christian.

Ephesians 4:29 (CJB)
29 Let no harmful language come from your mouth, only good words that are helpful in meeting the need, words that will benefit those who hear them.

You are responsible for what you say. If you cannot say something good, the Bible is clear: keep quiet.

What about when Jesus used a "curse word"? He had a different word that he used for a donkey.

Deuteronomy 30:19 (CJB)
19 “I call on heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have presented you with life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore, choose life, so that you will live, you and your descendants,(partial sentence)
Precious There are only two choices...Life or death; blessing or cursing...If you speak opposite of what God speaks, you are speaking cursing...If you speak what God speaks, you speak life. It's as simple as that....Jesus Himself said that He only says what He heard the Father say....Should we do otherwise?

Depends on how it is used. :laugh:

If you are referring to someone's rear end.. well, that isn't something I would consider respectful in front of Jesus.. sooo... yeah.. LOL

But If you are talking about a literal donkey, oh yeah.. hold down the trigger and let it go. It's in the Bible for crying out loud. I read the word 'p i s s' ( and it even sensors the word from within the Bible.. sigh.... lol )the other day in there in the Old Testament, I think is was Kings or Samuel.. memory is fuzzy.

I used to get in trouble for using that word! Ignorance isn't bliss for the child that did no wrong!! :rolleyes:

Exactly. It is also considered a curse word. How am I not able to use it in a joke then?
