God Sends an Evil or Distressing Spirit
1 Samuel 16:14: 1Sam 19:9: A distressing spirit from the Lord troubled Saul. (some translations say an "evil" or "wicked" spirit)
Judges 9:23: God sent a spirit of ill will between Abimelech and Shechem.

God Humbles the Proud

God Hardens Hearts

Proverbs 16:4: The Lord made even the wicked for the day of doom.
Hosea 4:17: Ephraim is joined to idols; let him alone.
Acts 7:42: God gave them up to worship the host of heaven.
Jeremiah 7:16: God tells Jeremiah not to pray for the people.
Jeremiah 11:14: God will not hear their prayers.
Jeremiah 15:1: Even Moses and Samuel could not intercede.

God Uses Judgment to Humble or Break People
Leviticus 26:36: God sends faintness into their hearts.
Isaiah 10:5?7: God uses Assyria as a rod of judgment.
Amos 8:11?12: God sends a famine of hearing His words.

Prov 29:1 A man who hardens his neck after much reproof Will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.

"After much reproof". God didn't do this right away... He did it after "much reproof".
But Finally God says enough is enough... then they broken beyond remedy. There is no cure. There is no fix for them.

2Jn 1:8 Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.
2Jn 1:9 Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.
2Jn 1:10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting;
2Jn 1:11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.

Even just giving a friendly greeting to these people makes you guilty.

Heb 12:15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;
Heb 12:16 that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal.
Heb 12:17 For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.

The word "inherit" is used over a dozen times in the New Testament. It seems that Esau lost his inheritance.

Matt 19:29 "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.
Matt 25:34 "Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
Mark 10:17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

People say Salvation is a gift.. you can't earn it. I agree we can't earn it. But gifts can be rejected. Gifts can be given away. Gifts can be returned or exchanged. Some gifts are never opened, they just sit on a shelf in a closet waiting to be opened.

Esau was willing to give up his gift, his birthright, his inheritance.. for a bowl of soup. A momentary pleasure that lasted a few minutes.
What is your cost? Are you willing to give up eternity with God for a short period of sin and pleasure?
Esau wished he could take it back... but for some, it will be too late.
