Then the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying: "[Concerning] this temple which you are building, if you walk in My statutes, execute My judgments, keep all My commandments, and walk in them, then I will perform My word with you, which I spoke to your father David. 1 Kings 6:11-12 NKJV
On Thursday we considered King David’s dying charge to Solomon: Take courage. Be a man. Obey everything written in the Law of Moses. Then you will be successful in all you do. And then God will keep His conditio0nal promise to make us the first in a dynasty of good, godly kings.
In today’s key verses, God reiterates: Obey everything written in the Law. Then I will keep My conditional promise to establish a Davidic dynasty.
If only.
True, by 1 Kings 8, Solomon dedicates the glorious temple to bring great wonder, honor, and praise to the Lord’s name. In the years after that, however, Solomon deliberately wanders away from God and breaks the first half of the Ten Commandments.
Don’t picture Solomon on top of the world at the end of his life. By 1 Kings 11, his kingdom has lost control of several territories. His vast wealth is greatly reduced. And his once brilliant reputation is tarnished beyond repair.
If only, indeed.
Solomon allowed his heart to be pulled away from God, so he died a foolish, idolatrous old man. May that never be said of you.
Prayer: Lord, please put a hedge of protection around me for the rest of my days.
