God’s Grace

READ: Psalm 60

Psalm 60:1 (NET) “O God, you have rejected us. You suddenly turned on us in your anger. Please restore us!”

Suppose you go out to your car today and you push on the gas pedal and nothing happens. You then go inside and announce that the car has no power and doesn’t work. Does the car really have no power? Or, have you attempted to operate the vehicle incorrectly without first starting the engine?

Can it be said that God is powerless when we approach Him incorrectly? The Bible says He is not. Moses, though full of doubt in the book of Exodus, was led by God to triumph over the Egyptians. Gideon, though questioning and insecure in God’s leading, led the nation to victory. Peter, though he sank in the water one moment and denied Christ another, was used by God to preach the Gospel superabundantly without fear.

Despite our many sins and shortcomings, God always fulfills His promises. You can’t find one logical reason God chose Israel to be His elect people. Not one. Not one reason can be concocted—except grace. That’s the only reason. This same grace enables us to see God work even as we approach Him with pride and wrong motives. Such an approach should never be our aim, but it is a testimony to the amazing power of the triune God as witnessed in Scripture.

Hebrews 4:14-16 “Therefore since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help.”

Faith Lesson: We have no rights whatsoever. The only reason we stand in good times and bad is by God’s grace.

In Christ,
Darin Smith
