Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. John 6:26 NKJV

The Lord is so generous that we can sometimes take His gifts for granted. Of course, that’s not a fault of His—it’s a bad tendency of our selfish human nature.

Jesus’ comment in today’s scripture comes the day after His miraculous feeding of five thousand men (plus accompanying women and children) with a young boy’s lunch. Five loaves and two fish were only “…but what are they among so many?” according to Andrew’s words in the John 6:9. But Jesus, who created the entire universe from nothing (Colossians 1:15-17), has no trouble turning one little lunch into a massive meal.

Though He could also impose the proper response—gratitude, worship, praise, service—He doesn’t. That’s entirely on us. As followers of Jesus, let’s commit today to be like that crowd only in its recognition of Jesus as Provider of all good things. But let’s be sure we go further, seeing God in all His actions.

May we never fall into the trap of pursuing Jesus only for what we might receive. There will be plenty of blessings if our heart’s priority is to honor Him.

Prayer: Lord, I thank You for all You give me. Please forgive me for those times when I look more to the gifts than to You as giver.
