When we yield to temptation, one of the first things we wonder is if God will continue to love us. Knowing that He is still extending His forgiveness to us brings comfort and reassurance. Forgiveness is the cornerstone to the message of salvation. God loves us so much that He sent His Son to die for us so that we might have eternal forgiveness.(John 3:16)
Through His life and death, Jesus did for us what we could not do for ourselves: He forgave all our sin–past, present, and future. Once the cleansing blood of Christ is applied to our lives, then sin’s stain is removed. The same is true for all who continue to come to the Lord.

God’s forgiveness requires two elements: sin that needs forgiving and Someone who will forgive the offender. Jesus is your advocate before the Father. (1 John 2:1)

When the enemy accuses you of wrong doing, Jesus steps forward and proclaims His faithful, eternal love for you.

There is nothing you can do that is beyond His ability to forgive. He knows all about you life–all your failures and heartaches–and still he chooses to love you. Once His forgiveness is installed, He restores your life and brings hope to every area.:boy_hug:

There is no power on earth or in heaven stronger than His love for you. In this you can rejoice!:love:

I would add that forgiveness is about reconciliation. Forgiveness of sin reconciles us to God. Forgiving others should reconcile us to them.

While it is true that there are 2 elements as described above... God will only forgive when the "sin" is recognized and confessed to Him. A sinner who refuses to recognize his/her sin is not forgiven even though Christ died for that sin. Reconciliation to God does not occur. It's as if God is ready to forgive and has made the way for forgiveness in Christ, but the forgiveness can't be completed until the sinner takes some action to confess and repent.
(1John 1:9)

I believe the same thing occurs in human relationships. Forgiveness is about reconciliation between people. If a person does a hurtful act against me. That creates a problem for our relationship. And while I can say "I forgive you" and genuinely mean it, forgiveness is not complete until that person recognises the offense and comes to me asking for forgiveness. Only then can forgiveness be complete and the relationship be repaired.

So I can have a clear conscience in that I have settled the issue in my mind and hold nothing against the offender. I can even reach out to the offender in love. But if that person refuses to recognize the offense, the damaged relationship cannot be recovered. And the purpose of forgiveness (reconciliation) is not acheived.

Using God's model of forgiveness, I will still forgive 70 x 7 whether the person comes to me or not. At least that way I know I have done what I can to reconcile and the ball is in that persons court.

God Bless you both. Good post. I echo Paul with these words spoken for you to God, this day. Thank you for this post.

1Co 1:3 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
1Co 1:4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;
1Co 1:5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;
1Co 1:6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
1Co 1:7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:
1Co 1:8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1Co 1:9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
1Co 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

God is ready and waiting to forgive anyone who asks.
Psalm 86:5, TLB. "O Lord, you are so good and kind, so ready to forgive; so full of mercy for all who ask your aid."

On what did David rest his hope of forgiveness?
Psalm 51:1, NIV. "Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions."

How is God's mercy measured?
Psalm 103:11-12, NIV. "For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."

The forgiven are forgiving.
Ephesians 4:32, NIV. "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

Through forgiveness, Christ provides complete deliverance from the penalty of sin.
Colossians 2:13-14, TLB. "You were dead in sins, and your sinful desires were not yet cut away. Then He gave you a share in the very life of Christ, for He forgave all your sins, and blotted out the charges proved against you, the list of His commandments, which you had not obeyed. He took this list of sins and destroyed it by nailing it to Christ's cross."
