He that [hath] no rule over his own spirit [is like] a city [that is] broken down, [and] without walls. Proverbs 25:28 KJV
If you expect to live whatever way you want after accepting Jesus’ offer of rescue, then you need to read the verse above at least one more time. You might want to live unshaken, but when you refuse to follow God on an adventure that includes denying self, loving others, and giving help when help is needed, then your spirit exists in an environment that Proverbs 25:38 describes as a run-down city with no walls. It’s a ghost town. It’s ancient ruins. It’s a story told in hushed tones.
If you’re the mayor of a personal ghost town with a desolate spirit, then maybe you’ve decided you don’t need to repair what has been broken. Or you might encounter others who are in this place of personal ruin.
When you find yourself shaken, you will need God’s help. Often He chooses to bring someone who is currently unshaken to help you through a season when you have given up on yourself. And sometimes you’ll need to be this kind of friend yourself.
Prayer: God, You don’t experience the desolation of the shaken, but You know how to fix it. You must feel sad when I allow my spirit to continue on in a broken state. Help me care enough to seek You for the repairs my life may need.
