Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 NLT
Polonius from Shakespeare’s Hamlet advised his son Laertes to pay attention to how he dressed because he knew people often judged a man by his clothes: “Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy, but not express’d in fancy; rich, not gaudy; for the apparel oft proclaims the man.”
While Polonius is portrayed as something of an old fool, his folk wisdom has descended into modern saying like “Clothes make the man.”
There is actually biblical support for this idea.
In Colossians 3:14, Paul writes, “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”
Paul’s message to his fellow believers was clear: Dress for success by putting on God’s attributes. When you wear the clothes of Christ—mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love—you’ll show the world what it means to be in perfect harmony with God Almighty.
Clothes don’t make the man, but dressing in God’s apparel can show the world what does—God’s love.
Prayer: Lord, help me be intentional about dressing in Your righteousness today.
