Genesis 6 Study
(Genesis 6:1-4) "And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, {2} That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. {3} And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. {4} ¶There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
The phrase “in those days” is found 61 times in the King James Bible. 60 verses in 53 chapters of 22 of the books contain the phrase. It is first seen in Genesis chapter 6 verse 4. When one sees the phrase used one can discern it is often found speaking in a prophetic nature. One can conclude “in those days” may point to not only a historical time period but also a period which has yet to pass.
It’s interesting that Genesis 6 contains the story of Noah and the flood, God’s first global judgment day. The phrase “in those days” then could be showing both the previous judgment and the coming judgment.
We read in Matthew (Matthew 24:36-40) "¶ But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. {37} But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. {38} For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, {39} And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. {40} Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left."
We see Jesus himself says the days of Noah shall be just like the days of the coming of the Son of man, he then gives the explanation of the rapture. Why is genesis 6 so vital to the understanding of the Bible? Because it will happen again; all but the flood of course. We know later God promises not to flood the earth again, but next time he comes with fire.
So if we know that the pretext to the flood will be coming again, we know we should be looking for evidence of what was happening.
That brings us back to our text (Genesis 6:1-2) "And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, {2} That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose."
This begs the question, who are the sons of God whom took wives of whomever they chose?
The phrase “sons of God” is used 11 times in the King James Bible 8 chapters in 6 different books. It is used twice in genesis 6 and 3times in the book of Job. In the book of Job the phrase is clearly in reference to angelic beings and not human. If we apply the principle of first mention we would have to conclude because the phrase is used in such a way that it must also be used like that throughout scripture. All 6 times the phrase is used in the New Testament it has to do with the doctrine of adoption through election, man becoming the sons of God by adoption. Becoming a “new creature”
There are 2 widely accepted theories on who the sons of God are. One is that they are fallen angels, a doctrine we just proved with other scripture (always use scripture to define scripture) the other is that they were the godly line of Seth, and that the “giants, mighty men, and men of renown” are a reference to their riches. This is a convenient explanation if we wish to stick our heads in the sand and ignore the more challenging parts of scripture, but it has no basis in scripture, and the theory falls apart when we combine it with other scriptures as seen above.
So now the question, are these mighty men and giants off spring of an angel-human hybrid? The only conclusion to the carnal human mind is, yes. And we see it proven in verse 4 (Genesis 6:4) "¶There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
Though we don’t know how angels were able to mate with the human female, we see they produced offspring. Whether they have the ability to procreate with humans or they used a genetic manipulation technology we have not discovered yet, we can’t be 100% certain. I’ve heard this used as an argument for the godly line of Seth theory, that humans can’t mate with an ape so we couldn’t mate with an angel either. I suppose the theory has some grounds for concern but it is a bit of a red herring. 1) We aren’t comparing apples to apples here, and 2) we don’t have an angel to test the theory using the scientific method.
What we do have is scripture telling us they had offspring, and scripture never lies.
My theory is that it is from genetic manipulation, and I base my theory on Satan’s hatred for the “seed” (Genesis 3:14-15) "¶And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: {15} And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
So if we conclude that fallen angels were somehow producing offspring with the human females, then we can conclude it will happen again based on the words of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. So now the even more concerning question, is this happening in society today? We can certainly see genetic manipulation in modern science. Most plant life we consume is in fact from genetically modified foods. I’m sure I could list countless sightings of “giants” “aliens” and conspiracy theories about genetically altered humans. We could look at Hollywood and how movies like x-men promote genetic manipulation, and “super powers.” I believe Satan most certainly has an end game that involves the manipulation of the human genome and an attempt at the destruction of the soul. He is the ultimate narcissist, he truly believes his 5 “I wills” even though the Lord has foretold his demise.
So what does all of this mean? Should we stockpile canned goods and isolate ourselves to avoid falling victim? I don’t think so, but I don’t believe we need to be ignorant to the Word of God either, sticking our heads in the sand to avoid controversy. Use it as motivation, encourage yourself to know the Lord is coming back soon, and motivate oneself to further spread the good news of the Gospel.
Let’s be cautious and vigilant, did not our Lord warn us? (Matthew 24:24) " For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."
