"Therefore, thus says the LORD: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; behold, I proclaim to you liberty to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, declares the LORD. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. Jeremiah 34:17 ESV

God always hears the cries of the oppressed. In today’s verse, He’s upset with His people for oppressing their own. One commentary points out that as soon as Nebuchadnezzar withdrew his army, the Jews took back their own slaves. But they weren’t allowed to hold anybody in servitude for more than seven years.

This all seems like a foreign concept to Christians today. Even so, today’s passage is still applicable for you. People all around you are trapped in sin with no hope of redemption other than Jesus.

One Sabbath, Jesus went into a synagogue in Nazareth and read from Isaiah, saying this prophecy was indeed about Himself: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives” (Luke 4:18 ESV).

This is your mission as well. You have been anointed and commissioned. Proclaim freedom from sin in the name of Jesus to anybody who will listen.

Prayer: Lord, You’ve given me a clear mission: to set the captives free by proclaiming the Gospel. Embolden me to do so.
