And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. Ephesians 1:10
On August 28, 1963, in front of a quarter-million people gathered on the Washington Mall, Martin Luther King Jr., seized a crucial moment in American history and gave his stirring “I Have a Dream” speech. King hoped that, by hastening racial harmony, citizens would “be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children….will be able to join hands” and sing a true song of praise to God for His freedom.
The day to which he referred will be the kingdom age, when Jesus reigns on earth, establishing true global peace for the first time ever. It was a theme King touched on throughout his speech, quoting Old Testament prophets who looked forward to that time, too. “Let justice run down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream” (Amos 5:24).
God’s plan from the foundation of the earth was to see His people gathered together and unified in worshipful living—a time King referenced: “The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5). In the meantime, there is work to do, and God wants you to be a part of it—as a peacemaker and reconciler in the only name that puts all men on equal, valued footing: Jesus Christ.
