Fools' words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating. The mouths of fools are their ruin; they trap themselves with their lips. Proverbs 18:6-7 NLT

Have you ever known a guy whose mouth got him into constant trouble? He got into trouble with his friends, trouble at work, even trouble at church. Have you ever been that guy?

If so, today’s scripture passage probably sounds a bit rough. You could easily paraphrase it to say, “Guys with big mouths often get put in their place, sometimes in painful ways.”

Today’s verses offer great wisdom for the man who has something of a sarcastic streak or who isn’t exactly diplomatic in how he says things. The book of Proverbs includes descriptions of many kinds of fools, and one is the man who can’t control his mouth. Today’s passage says that a fool who says things he shouldn’t can end up getting beaten, or worse.

What can you do to make sure the words you say don’t bring you conflict and strife?

Prayer: Father, I’m sometimes prone to saying things I shouldn’t. I recognize that can get me in trouble with my friends, my family, and those in authority over me. Give me Your wisdom so I can speak wisely and gently instead of harshly and sarcastically.
