The Church Divided
This was the apostle Paul speaking. The church in Corinth was divided because the people were largely becoming followers of man. For they associated themselves as either being of Paul or of Apollos or of Cephas, or some said they were of Christ. So this would be a lot like the church today claiming to be Baptist, Methodist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Charismatic, Presbyterian, and the like. So, he asked them if Christ was divided and if Paul was crucified for them and if they were baptized in the name of Paul.
1 Corinthians 1:17-19 NKJV
17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. 18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
So, first of all we need to understand that “the church” is not these individual organizations largely of human origin which are incorporated underneath (joined/partnered with) the state (the government) which are largely being marketed to the people of the world, which God forbids. The church is the universal body of believers in Jesus Christ who have died with him to sin and who are obeying our Lord as a matter of life practice. We, the people of God, are his church of which HE alone is to be the head.
[Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:13-17; Acts 5:27-32; 1 Corinthians 1:10-13; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Philippians 3:18-19; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22; Revelation 13:5-8; Revelation 18:1-5]
False Teachings of Man
But this isn’t just about the church being divided by denominations and partnerships with the state. This is about the body of Christ, his church, being divided by theologies and doctrines and teachings, many of which are not of God, and which are taught out of their biblical context in order to deliberately and habitually teach lies to the people. For many are avoiding many of the teachings of Christ and of his New Testament apostles in order to deliberately lead the people to accepting what is of Satan, instead.
For many are teaching a “gospel” of salvation totally absent of God’s requirements that we must deny self, die to sin, and obey God, in practice, if we are to have deliverance from sin and the hope of eternal life with God in heaven when we die, or when Jesus returns. So what they are teaching is of this world, and of the flesh nature. And so many who profess the name of Jesus have continued to live according to the flesh, doing what their flesh desires, living in sensuality, idolatry, immorality and in deceptiveness.
Thus, they are not in love with Jesus Christ, but they are in love with self and with the flesh. And what they desire is not to be like Jesus in character, but they hunger after what and/or who is wicked, evil, corrupt, immoral, lewd and dishonest. They hunger and thirst after what is sinful, and they embrace evil, and they want what is of the flesh more than they want anything else. And so much of what is called “church” is giving its stamp of approval on addictive sin and moral corruptness among its “members,” too.
[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 1:18-32; Romans 2:5-10; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; Romans 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10,19-20; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; 2 Corinthians 5:10,15,21; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 10:19-39; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:1-6; 1 John 3:4-10; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22]
Testing the Spirits
Paul was a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ in its purest and most biblical sense, as he was led by the Holy Spirit, and not of the flesh. His wisdom did not come from theologians and debaters of the Scriptures, but his wisdom came from God alone, by the Spirit. He did not use words which would attract the world to himself, but he spoke the truth of God’s word for the salvation of human lives out from under their addiction to sin so they will now serve Jesus Christ in walks of obedience to our Lord’s commands.
For by God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, which is not of our own doing, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to righteousness in walks of obedience to God’s commands. We are no longer to permit sin to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience to God is what we obey, it results in sanctification, and its end is eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).
So, if a pastor or a preacher of “the Scriptures” is telling you that you do not have to repent (die to sin) and obey God, in practice, and that if you profess faith in Jesus Christ that God is now going to overlook all of your future sins, and heaven is still your eternal destiny, you are being lied to big time! So go to the Scriptures yourselves. Read them in their correct biblical context. Read them under the direction of the Holy Spirit. And then surrender your lives to Christ to obey him and to no longer walk in sin, all in his power.

To the angels of all the churches write:
These are the words of your Lord and your God.
I know all your deeds, and your witness, too,
And who holds to My words and tells what’s true.
I know all your hard work and your perseverance,
Yet I hold against you: you’ve forsaken Me.
Listen to what I say to you.
You have people there who deny My name,
And who put the cross of Christ up to shame.
They entice the people to Me, profane,
And their worship of Me is all in vain.
They are so adult’rous as they chase their idols,
And you put up with them easily enough.
Listen to what I say to you.
You give off an image of godliness,
But what you present is so fraudulent,
Or else you lack passion for Jesus Christ,
So you look to others to tell what’s right.
I say turn from your sin, or you will face judgment.
He who overcomes will have eternal life.
Listen to what I say to you.
I know your afflictions and poverty;
How you suffer for your Lord patiently.
Do not fear the devil and company.
You be faithful to your Lord endlessly.
I know all your weakness and your dedication.
You have kept My Word and not denied your Lord.
I will write on you My new name.
