See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. Song of Solomon 2:11-12
Spring was a welcome season in ancient Israel. They rarely had snow in winter, but they had heavy winter rains, and they were often chilly. But the cold rains brought great blessings in their wake: from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south, the entire land came alive with blossoms, flowers, and greenery. Jesus said, “Notice the fig tree, or any other three. When the leaves come out, you know…that summer is near” (Luke 21:29-30).
Also, “the cooing of doves” indicated that the mating season had arrived. In ancient times, spring was known as the season of love (see Song of Songs 6:11-12; 7:12).
Winter was when the Israelites sowed their grain, and harvest was in late spring/early summer. It’s in this context of seasons that the Psalms say, “He hat goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him” (Psalm 126:6).
You may be going through a cold, dark winter season, the land may seem dead and dreary, and your eyes may be moist with tears, but take cheer! Spring is coming!
