Find Joy When You Stop Seeking It

Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Psalm 90:14

If you've ever had a difficult season or generally struggle to find joy throughout each day, you may wonder how to find joy during discouraging or difficult times. The short answer is: by not seeking joy!

This runs counter to advice from experts telling you to treat yourself to what you desire, to set aside time for yourself, or to create experiences that offer joy and fulfillment. While each of these actions may be fine in their place, taken at face value, they run counter to the wisdom of scripture.

Your joy is linked with the source of your satisfaction. In fact, the psalmist writes that you begin your days with the satisfaction of God's lovingkindness. When you find satisfaction in God's love and kindness, you find a stable foundation for the rest of the day.

Are you disappointed, bitter, or resentful? Perhaps consider where you have sought satisfaction. How you sought satisfaction in work, a hobby, entertainment, or a relationship that over-shadowed the ever-present love of God?

God's lovingkindness gives you security and peace that no one can steal. You can only "lose" God's lovingkindness if you lose sight of it…but then its presence in your life doesn't rely on your seeing it.
