God gave Solomon very great wisdom and understanding, and knowledge as vast as the sands of the seashore. ... 32 He composed some 3,000 proverbs and wrote 1,005 songs. 33 He could speak with authority about all kinds of plants, from the great cedar of Lebanon to the tiny hyssop that grows from cracks in a wall. He could also speak about animals, birds, small creatures, and fish. 34 And kings from every nation sent their ambassadors to listen to the wisdom of Solomon. 1 Kings 4:29, 32-34 NLT

Solomon was the world’s wisest man. Not only that, but the Lord promised: “I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!” (1 Kings 3:12). What an amazing promise. Not only was Solomon wise, but he wrote down thousands of pithy statements and composed more than a thousand songs.

Then again, let’s not forget Monday’s parting lesson: It’s one thing for a writer to say he feels inspired. That’s “a lightning bug.” It’s quite another thing for the Holy Spirit to divinely inspire a biblical author. That’s “lightning”!

Accordingly, less than one in four of Solomon’s proverbs made it into the Bible—but what practical and divine wisdom they offer. More surprisingly, only one of Solomon’s songs made it into God’s Word, but what a passionate and inspired musical.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for divinely inspiring scripture. What a treasure!
