Hebrews 4:1-2, 6-7 BSB

“1Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it. 2For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.”

6Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience, 7God again designated a certain day as “Today,” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

God’s rest, being spoken of here, is not in reference to the Jewish Sabbath rest, but to God’s eternal rest, to salvation from sin and eternal life with God. Many people who profess faith in Jesus Christ, and who refer to themselves as Christians, will not enter into God’s eternal rest because of disobedience, because sinning against God remained their habit and not obedience to God and to his commandments (under the New Covenant).

Too many people today are being taught a false gospel of salvation which does not require death to sin and obedience to God, as required by God. Those who are accepting that false gospel, and who are continuing in deliberate and habitual sin, and not in walks of surrender to God, in obedience to his commands, will not enter into God’s eternal rest. They will not have salvation from sin nor eternal life with God, because of unbelief.

So, this is a caution and a warning against falling short of this eternal rest being offered to us by God, which comes from God, and which is not of our own doing. And the way people fall short of it is by rejecting the teachings of Christ and of his New Testament apostles on the truth of the gospel, taught in the correct biblical context, and they are listening to liars who are telling them they don’t have to obey God and they don’t have to forsake their sins.

But even many who believe that God requires obedience to his commands and death to sin have this false sense of security that God is still going to let them into his heaven because they prayed the prayer to receive Christ or because they do many other “Christian” things. And so they excuse away their deliberate and habitual sin, and give themselves grace, while they ignore the fact that God says we will die in our sins if we don’t die to them.

Too many people who refer to themselves as “Christians” are relying on a false hope of salvation from sin and of eternal life with God while they continue in deliberate and habitual sin against God and not in walks of obedience to our Lord and to his commands. So, if that is where you are today, please know that will not get you saved, and it will not give you eternal life with God. So today, repent of all sin and follow God in obedience.

Trust and Obey

Words by John H. Sammis, 1887
Music by Daniel B. Towner, 1887

When we walk with the Lord
in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise,
not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear,
not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear,
not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove
the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows,
for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet.
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
