Everday Double Agents

A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways. James 1:8

Aldrich Ames, a CIA operative, was arrested on this day in 1994 and charged with selling secrets to the Soviet Union. The information he sold had led to the exposure, arrest, and deaths of dozens of CIA operatives in the East Bloc. His careless spending on pricey homes and cars led to his arrest, and he eventually received a life sentence.

Ames is one of history’s most infamous double agents, but a far greater number of men have, in similar ways, sabotaged themselves spiritually. While they haven’t sold state secrets to enemy nations, they have secretly tried to have it both their way and God’s way. These nominal Christians put on all the airs of discipleship, shaking hands and offering prayers on Sunday morning but carrying on with affairs, shady business deals, and self-serving behavior the rest of the week.

James called this behavior being “double minded.” A man like that will fool a lot of people a lot of the time, but never God. As Paul wrote, “Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant” (Galatians 6:7). When you know about God and His ways but try to play both sides rather than giving all you are over to Him, you’ll destabilize your whole life. Better to trust Him all the way or not at all.

Amen! Absolutely the truth! God is never fooled!
