Enough Space

Abandoning that one, Isaac moved on and dug another well. This time there was no dispute over it, so Isaac named the place Rehoboth (which means "open space"), for he said, "At last the LORD has created enough space for us to prosper in this land." Genesis 26:22 NLT

Famine caused a grown-up Isaac to leave the land of his birth and find a place to raise his own family. When he became wealthy in one place, he was asked to leave: “Go somewhere else…for you have become too powerful for us” (Genesis 26:16 NLT).

Isaac moved on. The men who worked for him dug several wells, and each time someone else claimed ownership of a well they hadn’t dug. Isaac was on the move once more. Isaac didn’t give up. He kept digging wells until one day no one came to take the new well away. His family, workers, and livestock had fresh water. Isaac said, “At last the Lord has created enough space for us to prosper in this land” (v.22).

It may not be a dispute over a well, but there may have been times in your life when something made it impossible for you to live life without interference from others. Every human being will have hardships to endure, and if you are in tune with the God who rescues, then He can carve out a place filled with promise. He will give you purpose. He will develop His plan in your displaced heart.

Prayer: Father, give me patience. I want what I don’t have now. Help me want what You want so that I have enough space to grow into new life loving.
