The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'" Luke 4:3-4 ESV
Pastor Don Mogford once said, “When you’re being tempted, and you will be, quote scripture.”
Mogford’s youth group had just completed a ten-week program that included memorizing sections of the Bible. The verses/passages the high schoolers committed to memory covered the “seven deadly” sins: envy, gluttony, greed, lust, pride, laziness, and anger. He also added passages from the Bible about bitterness, sadness, and anxiety. He wanted these teens to practice the process Jesus used to face direct temptation.
Every time He faced the devil’s enticements in the wilderness, Jesus cited the Bible. Instead of pointing out fallacies or trying to outsmart the devil, which He certainly could have done, He simple quoted the scriptures. You should too.
Paul told Timothy “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” (2 Timothy 3:16 NLT)
This weekend, use an online Bible app or concordance to help you look up and begin memorizing scripture verses you can use to confront your strongest temptations. You’ll be glad you did.
Prayer: Father, help me help myself, so that I can confront the temptations that come my way the way Jesus did.
