Dying for Jesus
The Bible says during the tribulation some Christians will be beheaded for their faith.
( Rev 20:4; )
It's interesting that John the Baptist was also beheaded.
( Matt 14:10; )
This isn't really a new thing dying for your faith, even in times of the early church people were killed for their faith. In Hebrews 11:35-37; it talks about people who were stoned, sawn in two, and put to death by the sword.
James (the brother of John, one of the sons of thunder) was put to death by the sword ( Acts 12:2; )
Even today, Christians are persecuted and killed for their faith in many countries. There are some places in the world where being a Christian is against the law.
However this thread isn't really about being martyred really.
Christians do have to physically die for their faith sometimes. But how about spiritually dying to self?
Matt 16:24; Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
Luke 9:23;And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.
Luke 9:24; For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.
1 Peter 2:11; Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.
Hebrews 11:25; choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,
We are told several times in the Bible to die to ourselves, (die to our fleshly desires)
Romans 6:2; May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
Romans 8:13; for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Romans 12:1; Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
Romans 13:14; But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
There are many ways to die to our flesh. For example the definition of love.
Love is simply caring about someone else more than you care about yourself. Love is the opposite of selfishness.
So by loving other people, we are dying to our selfish flesh.
Philippians 2:4; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
1 Corinthians 10:24; Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.
Galatians 5:16; But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
Colossians 3:3; For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:4; When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
Colossians 3:5; Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.
2 Tim 2:21; Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.
Titus 2:12; instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,
1 Peter 4:2; so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
He must increase, so that we can decrease ( John 3:30; )
In a way, dying physically for Christ is much easier than dying to ourselves. Dying to ourselves is living for Christ.
Galatians 2:20; I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
Galatians 5:24; Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Unless we die to ourselves, we really can't bear any fruit.
John 12:24; Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
Mark 8:34; And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
Mark 8:35; For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.
Mark 8:36; For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
Matthew 10:38; And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.
1 Corinthians 15:31; I affirm, brethren, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
Why did Jesus die? How does he want us to live?
1 Peter 2:24; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
Romans 6:3; Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
There are of course people who claim to be Christians and still think it's all about them. The truth is, we can either live for ourselves and the world, or we can live for Christ.
Matthew 16:26; For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Luke 9:25; For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?
In Acts 21:13; Paul said he was ready to die in Jerusalem for the name of Jesus.
Peter said this also...
Matthew 26:35; Peter *said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.
Mark 14:31; But Peter kept saying insistently, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing also.
However, as we know Peter ran away and denied Jesus three times within the next 24 hours (before the rooster crowed).
I wonder how many of us say we won't deny Jesus, and yet by our selfish actions we deny him everyday.
