Behold, how good and how pleasant [it is] for brethren to dwell together in unity! Psalm 133:1 KJV
In the broad sense of the word (which seems to be the context in today’s verse), men find it difficult to live together in unity. They backbite and have their own interests at heart to the point of disunity. Consider Abraham and Lot or the more extreme case of Joseph and his brothers. Then again, when unity prevails, it is wonderful and pleasant.
The word dwell in today’s verse means to sit down, abide, and continue. If the world is supposed to take notice of people dwelling together in unity (“Behold!”), shouldn’t Christians be the model for such behavior?
What are you doing to dwell in unity with fellow believers? Are you breaking bread with them regularly? Are you present in their lives during good times and bad? Are you prayerfully working through the implications of the Gospel together? If not, then this is the call.
Start this week by reaching out to a brother in Christ and asking him if he’d like to begin meeting regularly. If that doesn’t work out, then keep your eyes open at church for men who might be willing to do so.
Prayer: Father, I know how important it is to live out my faith in community, but I’m not always quick to take action. Help me do so this week.
