In those days, as Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate, Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, became angry and sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. And this came to the knowledge of Mordecai, and he told it to Queen Esther, and Esther told the king in the name of Mordecai. Esther 2:21-22 ESV

Mordecai had every excuse to ignore what he had overheard. He was living in exile under the control of a king who had no attachment to his people. The king had taken his cousin into the harem regardless of her desires. It would have been understandable if Mordecai had said this wasn’t his problem. Yet he remained committed to doing what was right, and that brought significant benefits to him and to his people.

You may not know how your actions today will play out into the future. It’s impossible to see how one good deed can lead to one blessing after another. There is always a reward for obedience and a reason to seek the preservation of life, even if that person is your enemy. By seeking the welfare of all people, regardless of their allegiance to you, you are both obeying the command of Jesus to love your neighbors and creating opportunities for blessings in the days to come.

Prayer: Father, help me to seek the welfare of all people, doing what is right no matter what the circumstances may be.

James 4:13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

We cannot help every one since we are not God, but we can rely on Him to guide us to do what we can and leave the rest in His care so as to have His peace that He is Lord.
