Does our current 7-day week correspond exactly to the same 7 days in the creation narrative?

The current 7-day week is widely believed to originate from the creation narrative in Genesis, where God created the heavens and earth in six days and rested on the seventh day, which He blessed and sanctified. This weekly cycle is seen as a reflection of God's own pattern of work and rest, with the Sabbath serving as a commemoration of creation. The biblical account states that God rested on the seventh day after completing His work, and this day was set apart as holy.

However, whether the modern 7-day week corresponds exactly to the original creation week is uncertain. The precise day of the week on which the creation week began, or which day corresponds to the original Sabbath, cannot be definitively established. Some Christian traditions believe the Sabbath cycle has been preserved since creation, aligning the modern with the original seventh day. Others argue that the present Jewish calendar, which determines the Sabbath, was not established until the fourth century A.D., and thus there is no historical or scientific basis for asserting that today's Saturday is the original Sabbath. Furthermore, events like the “long day” of Joshua, which reportedly lasted longer than a normal day, may have disrupted the weekly cycle.

While the structure of the week—six days of work followed by a day of rest—is consistent with the creation account, the specific days of the modern calendar do not necessarily align with the days of the original creation week. The significance lies in the pattern of a seven-day cycle and the sanctity of the seventh day, rather than the exact day of the week. Therefore, while the concept of a seven-day week is deeply rooted in the biblical creation narrative, the current calendar days do not correspond exactly to the days of creation as described in Genesis.

It does not seem as though our Saturday is necessarily identical with the seventh day in Genesis, or at the least difficult to prove that it does. Isn't it legalistic to attempt enforcing religiously that Saturday is identical to the 7th day in Genesis?
