Dear friends,

As I was reading Revelation chapter 2 (I read it many times), there's one question that has been in my mind:

Revelation 2:15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.

The question is:

What is this doctrine that Jesus was talking about?

Could some body please tell me about this? I would like to hear from you.

God bless you.

its been a while since i been on talk jesus forums but nonetheless.... i've always been taught that this teaching is the same as the teaching of Balaam, (see verse 14) in fact in the NLT bible, verse 15 reads like this:"In the same way, you have some Nicolaitans among you-- people who follow the same teaching and commit the same sins."(in reference to verse 14 where it talks about Balaam.) Verse 15 can also be cross-referenced to verse 6 of the same chapter, for which the study guide in my bible says the following:
The Nicolaitans were believers who compromised their faith in order to enjoy some of the sinful practices of Ephesian society. [the word is]... a greek equivelent to the Hebrew word Balaamites...

I hope that clarifies it a little bit for you

Dear YegorYeliz,

Thank you so much, but one more question. Could this be from the deacon Nicholas, who was one among the seven deacons chosen in:

Acts 6:5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch.

I heard one preacher say that he had backslid and fell in sin. I would like to hear from you.

God bless you.

The notes in my NIV Study Bible for Rev 2:6 say that tradition holds that the Nicolaitans did indeed spring from the Jewish convert Nicholas of Antioch, but, there's no solid evidence to support that idea.

They'd apparently reached a compromise with the pagan society about them and begun to preach that spiritual liberty gave them license to practice idolatry and adultery.

It makes sense, considering that Nicolaus of Antioch was a convert to christianity (proselyte), like many others at the time. What i suspect happened, was upon being saved, he did not completely let go of his fleshly desires, yet still wanted to server God. So he began making compromises with sin, and teaching others to do so.

Nothing much changes then.

Blessings - I have learnt something I did not previously know from these posts.

To anyone who can read,

You know, after doing a little research on Nicolaitans and finding out who they are and what they were about (see above posts), the Lord has been leading me to examine my own life. I've asked myself the question many times in the last couple of days... "what have i been doing in my life to make compromises with sin?" i was amazed to find a number of things that i took for being "normal", to be just outright compromises with sin. It's things that we as humans tend to label as "ok". As yourselves this question... Have you ever hesitated to do something because you knew is was a sin in God's eyes, or just weren't sure if it was ok or not, but decided to go ahead and do it anyway? and simply justify it as "not as bad", "others do it too"?
Asking myself these kinds of questions has lead me to change the way i look at a lot of things in my life.
I hope this will help you to live a more pure and radical life for christ, as much as it helped me.

“The sect of Nicolaus” (or Nicolaitans) is condemned in two of the seven letters to the congregations in chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation. For hating “the deeds of the sect of Nicolaus,” which Christ Jesus himself also hates, “the angel” of the Ephesus congregation was commended. (Re 2:1,*6) In the congregation at Pergamum, however, there were some “holding fast the teaching of the sect of Nicolaus,” from which they were urged to turn away and repent.—Re 2:12, 15,*16.

Aside from what is here written in Revelation about the sect of Nicolaus, nothing else is known of it, either of its practices and teachings, which are condemned, or of its origin and development. The connective “so” immediately following the reference to the immoral and idolatrous course the Israelites pursued due to “the teaching of Balaam” (Re 2:14,*15) might indicate some similarity, but Revelation makes a distinction between the two. There is no reason to connect the sect with Nicolaus the Antiochian Christian (No. 1) just because he is the only person of that name in the Bible, as has also been done by some of the early church writers. Nor is it warranted to say that some apostatized sect took his name to give weight to their wrongdoing. Nicolaus was more probably a Biblically unidentified individual after whom the ungodly movement was named
