Do You KNOW Jesus?

Jude 1:5 “Now I desire to remind you (even though you have been fully informed of these facts once for all) that Jesus, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, later destroyed those who did not believe.”

Jude begins the first of three examples of those judged who did not believe. Israel, fallen angels, and Sodom and Gomorrah make this list. This history of disobedience and judgment will be contrasted later in 1:8 with a present pattern of the unruly and immoral.

Perhaps most important to us today is how the Israelites can be chosen by God and still be destroyed. A nation that received blessing upon blessing from God still managed to fall under judgment.

This text is not suggesting that one can lose their salvation. Recall that proper Bible study uses Scripture to interpret Scripture. Those who are truly repentant and regenerated by the Holy Spirit are kept for and by Jesus Christ until the end.

However, what Jude is getting at is this: Though they saw the miracles, were led directly by God in a pillar of light, and experienced God’s blessings, those who were destroyed (see Numbers 14 and 1 Cor. 10:1-15) were close to God but knew nothing of God. Judas is the New Testament example of this. In a sense, we are talking about true and false conversion. In a greater sense, we are talking about how obedience toward God should appear in all areas of your life. It is as though God cages you in when you sin. For the Scripture says in our faith lesson for today:

Faith Lesson:

Hebrews 12:5-11 “And have you forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons? ‘My son, do not scorn the Lord's discipline or give up when he corrects you. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son he accepts.’ 7 Endure your suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?

8 But if you do not experience discipline, something all sons have shared in, then you are illegitimate and are not sons. 9 Besides, we have experienced discipline from our earthly fathers and we respected them; shall we not submit ourselves all the more to the Father of spirits and receive life? 10 For they disciplined us for a little while as seemed good to them, but he does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness. 11 Now all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness for those trained by it.”
