"Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, 'Friend, we have a better place for you!' Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Luke 14:10-11 NLT
Jesus is looking for people who aren’t seeking greatness but who are willing to serve others with a humble heart. Exalting yourself is a sure way to become alienated from God. The moment you think you’re worthy of a higher place, you can’t serve others and cannot submit to God’s direction. By seeking your own advancement, you’ll become consumed with how others can support your greatness. You can even turn a spiritual practice into a kind of manipulation of God.
Taking the lower seat means that you’ll need to watch others push themselves to the front. You need to have faith that God will notice you for the right things and at the right time. You’ll likely have to be content with obscurity while others pile up accolades. Yet when God recognizes your humility and service to others, no one can take away your position. You won’t have to battle insecurity because you are assured in your heart to receive a position from God.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to trust that You see me and that my faith and hope in You will one day be rewarded.
