Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
This passage says that we have been forgiven.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
It is taught that 1 John 1:9 means we have to confess our sins to receive forgiveness.
We can not, at the same time, have forgiveness, but have to confess it in order to receive it.
1 John 1:9 is written only for national Israel, who as a nation, was to confess their iniquities:
1[Leviticus 26:40 KJV] "If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;"
[Nehemiah 1:6 KJV] "Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned."
[Nehemiah 9:2 KJV] "And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers."
[Ezra 10:11 KJV] "Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives."
