“Do not fret because of evildoers,
Be not envious toward wrongdoers.
For they will wither quickly like the grass
And fade like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday.” (Psalm 37:1-6 NASB1995)
Who are the evildoers in our day and time? They are all who deliberately and habitually choose their sin over God and over their spouses and over their family members and the church and their neighbors and their friends. They are all who deliberately do evil to other people without conscience or remorse. Many of them are those who plot evil against others for their own political or financial gain, or in order to gain positions of tyrannical power and rule over others in a diabolical plot to conquer world nations.
They are liars, manipulators, backstabbers, malicious, morally corrupt, deceivers, opportunists, untrustworthy, egocentrics, and/or those who fake their Christianity to gain power and control over the church and to deceive professers of faith in Jesus Christ into believing and following after their lies. Some (or many) of them are heads of nations, politicians, government officials, newscasters, actors, heads of church denominations, pastors, lawyers, CEOs of corporations, and doctors, etc., or just ordinary people.
Some of them are professers of faith in Jesus Christ who deliberately sin without conscience and then who lie to try to cover up their sins. They convince themselves that all their sins are forgiven and thus they can now sin as much as they want without feelings of guilt or remorse, and without consequence, no matter who gets hurt in the process. And they convince themselves that their habitual and deliberate sins will have no impact on their salvation from sin nor their eternal life with God. But that is a lie!
For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).
And we learn in 1 John 1-3 that if we claim that we have fellowship with God, but yet we walk in darkness (sin), we are liars. If we claim that we know God, but we do not obey his commandments, in practice, we are liars. For it is not the one who claims he is “in Christ” who is “in Christ,” but it is the one who has denied self, died with Christ to sin, and who is now walking in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in practice, and no longer in sin. We have the hope and the promise of eternal life with God in heaven.
But we are not to fret just because some (or the majority) of these evildoers are getting their way and they are accomplishing their evil purposes. And we should definitely not envy evildoers and their seeming ability to keep on in their evil deeds without consequence. One day they will get their just rewards unless they repent of (turn away from) their sins and have a change of heart and mind resulting in a change of behavior via biblical faith in Jesus Christ through which we die to sin and now obey our Lord in practice.
Our trust needs to be in the Lord Jesus, and we must be his followers who do his will, in the power of God, because of Jesus’ sacrifice on that cross to put our sins to death with him and then to rise from the dead in victory over sin, Satan, death, and hell. By faith in him we are able to do the good that God would have for us to do, and we are able to be faithful to our Lord and to his gospel truth in his power now at work within us, via our submission to him and our surrender to do his will in obedience to his commands.
And to delight ourselves in the Lord is not a superficial thing based on human emotions, but it means to take pleasure in our Lord and in who he is and in all that he taught us, even in the hard truths that he taught that many have rejected. And if our delight (pleasure, desire, preference) is in the Lord and all of who he is and of all that he commands, then our desires will be his desires, so when he gives us the desires of our hearts, they are not worldly or fleshly desires, but they are desires after righteousness.
And when we commit our way to the Lord, trusting our lives into his hands, our righteousness will be the righteousness of God within us being lived out through us in the power of God by faith in Jesus Christ. In His power we will live out the plan God has for our lives in holy living in obedience to His commands. And if we are willing, he will use us for his purposes and for his glory to shine the light of the gospel to the people of the world. But it needs to be the gospel taught by Jesus and by his New Testament apostles.
For by God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, which is not of our own doing, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to righteousness in walks of obedience to God’s commands. We are no longer to permit sin to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience to God is what we obey, it results in sanctification, and its end is eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer
Lyrics by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897
Music by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897
Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.
Oh, to be like Thee! full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wandering sinner to find.
O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer others to save.
O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.
Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
