Hello all,
Been browsing the site for a few days, happened to find it on Google, and so far this has been a site with great information.
I know this topic is much debated, but I would like to share my story and get your opinions. First of all I have been a Christian now for about one and a half years, and they have truly been the best in my life. The Lord has worked with me to become a better man then I could have ever dreamed of.
Well before I came to know Christ, I was living a good life or so I thought. Had a great job, was making good money, got married etc. etc. I was married when I was 25, now 28. Well to make a long story short and spare details, things fell apart in my marriage, mostly for things I was doing, and not listening to my wife and her needs etc. and I ran from the marriage and filed for divorce. This was an unscriptural divorce as my wife was faithful and did not want the divorce. At the time of the divorce we were both non-Christians.
During the divorce I accepted Jesus Christ into my life and that’s when my life changed. I had started to seek God and the scriptures to what He had to say about marriage/divorce etc.. During this time the divorce became final, however I wanted to seek reconciliation with my wife and start a marriage that was directed towards God as I felt God leading me into the right direction. It took me some time, but I asked for her forgiveness and reconciliation and that I wanted to repair the marriage. She told me that she was with another man, that she bought a house with him, and she was very happy and did not want to reconcile the marriage.
I really could not believe that during the divorce which was about a year she already moved on. At that time I thought it was OK for me to move on, but then I hit a wall. Many people who are Christians would point me to scripture saying I can not remarry according to scripture and if I did I would go to hell for being in an constant state of adultery etc.. Now those are some big words.
At this time I sought God and His word. At this time I am still seeking reconciliation, however just praying that if in God's will He works it out. The questions I have are about remarriage, if that is an option. I have a greater love in my than I have before and would like to be with someone however their are many who think that if you get divorced you are to remain single, if you cannot be reconciled to your wife as the Apostle Paul said.
I know the scriptures as I have been over them many times. I know the Lord forgives, however I do not want to be out of the will of God. God will never go against his word, and so if I do remarry it would be adultery (whether one time or not,) however the big concern is I will not be doing God's will and that to me hurts as I do not want to do anything outside the will of God as their will be consequences. He has a plan for each of us and if I go outside of His will that could destroy the plan for my life.
I do understand the scripture of being a new creation once accepting Christ, however I don’t feel as that wipes away my marriage, because in God’s eyes we are still married and entering in a new marriage is still adultery as my wife is still alive.
So what are your opinions on remarriage, reconciliation, etc.. I know this is a long post, but this is one area that has been a tough one. As I said I am still seeking God, but it’s always great to hear from other Christians as well.
Sorry for the long post, thanks everyone.
