In marriage; a man and woman unite their lives in love. This love that unites them is God. God therefore becomes the binding force in their marriage; and through Him, with Him and in Him they can express His love to one another. God stayed faithful to His covenant with his people (his spouse) although they were unfaithful to Him, rejected Him and betrayed Him. Furthermore, in His faithfulness to the covenant with his people, he saved us from eternal damnation by accepting the most painful death. We too are called to love our spouse as God loved us (Ephesians 5:25). We must therefore deny ourselves and take up our cross daily and follow what Jesus did (Luke 9:23) by accepting pain and suffering in order to bring healing to our spouse; especially when there is hurt, unfaithfulness and betrayal. Those who are obedient to the word of God are able to do this; because faithfulness to His words enables us to live by his spirit.
Since God is the binding force in a marriage it is permanent and no human organization can dissolve it (Matthew 19:4-6). Divorce therefore is rejection of the covenant (binding force), rather than its dissolution. Remarriage after divorce therefore is adultery (Luke 16:18). Furthermore, since God is the binding force in marriage rejection of it through divorce is rejection of God.

You left the exceptions to divorce too. Why? There are grounds for divorce, although GOD hates divorce - He does allow it in certain situations. I do believe forgiveness and reconciliation is #1 though. But, sometimes one spouse will not humble themselves before the Lord and desire the biblical route for saving a marriage.

The Bible gives two grounds for divorce:

1. sexual immorality / Matthew 5:32; 19:9
2. abandonment by an unbeliever / 1 Corinthians 7:15

Agreed Chad, and if we have the mind of Christ, while we would do all we can to save our marriage no matter what the reason for its difficulty, we must also be of a mind to let the spouse go if he/she so desires. Love demands this, though it may be the most difficult thing in the world. It is a glimpse of the pain God must feel when His 'spouse' walks away.

Arunangelo: If more couples really understood how sacred marriage is and it is a Covenant that God expects christians to abide by there might really be a change in the christian world. Pergaps those who marry them have a huge responsibility in counseling couples in what God expects from them.

However, Jesus foreknew there whoul be those who were christians that would brake their marriage vows. There is no place Jesus said a unfaithful mate must always be put aside with divorce. Restorantion is always so much better, and IF the couple can work through their problems their marraige can be even better. The work to restore a marriage is very hard, but the praise to God will be outstanding.

There are those who have had mares that wandered and would not work things out. For those Jesus gave them freedom.

But, if you are reading this and you have become aware that your divorce and remarriage are not Biblical what should you do? Confess to the Lord that you have sinned, and confess that you will form this point on honor the Covenant you have made with your present marraige. This does not allow for us to keep divorcing from now on, unless it is for Biblical reasons. God bless you that have endured marriage failures in the past, it is a new day, a new day, now let your life show what King you serve.

What is the deal with so many Christians who push a particular agenda using scripture poorly, ignoring versus that clearly contradict them, or in this case allow for something God may dislike but does so of his supreme volition?

One would think, they would give more thought to the process before others point out how glaringly wrong they are.

Just sayin'.....

Edit: my apologies to you Barabas, I posted and misunderstood what you meant. Please forgive me. I thought you were attacking the two verses I quoted. Again, my apologies.

I was talking about the original post, if you will notice I "liked" your post, and agree with it 100%.

No apologies needed brother, and regardless you were forgiven as I read your post. I thought that the fact that I liked your post would have sufficed, I was wrong. It is I who should apologize.

about the original post .....Its that kind of hard line thinking that keeps people seperated from God after a divorce because we would rather shoot our wounded instead of binding their wounds ..THE AGE OF GRACE....the reason that that God took that OT stance was because they were jumping from one to another like changing clothes...God allowed Moses to issue a writ of divorce because Mans heart was continually on evil // ..my wife of 6 yrs left in 96 because she didnt want to be married any more ..we were ministry partners and prayer partners i stood and did counseling with the pastor of the church to no avail.....Now im married to a differant woman for 16 yrs ( that im quite sure was God sent ) and im Glad God blessed us in this union instead of cursing me for something not of my making ...we need to stop casting stones and start loving on the ones that divorce affects the most..(wounded spouses and children) they are not to be cast off as sinners but welcomed as hurting and wounded....BIND THIER WOUNDS AND ANNOIT THEM WITH THE OIL OF HEALING IN JESUS NAME......if you have never been it that spot i tell you its ripping to the soul.....Rev
